The Washington Football Team will be without a key offensive weapon for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers.
ESPN's John Keim and others have confirmed that Washington leading rusher Antonio Gibson won't play against San Francisco after he injured his toe in Monday's surprising 23-17 win over the then-unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers that propelled Washington to a 5-7 record and a tie with the New York Giants atop the NFC East standings.
New York holds the tiebreaker due to sweeping the season series versus Washington.
Friday's update isn't surprising, as reports from earlier in the week suggested Gibson's toe injury could sideline him for multiple contests. He'll nevertheless be missed, as he leads Washington with 659 rushing yards, 141 carries and 11 touchdowns on the ground. Only Dalvin Cook of the Minnesota Vikings (13) and Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans (12) have accumulated more rushing scores this season among RBs, per ESPN stats.
After Gibson went down on Monday, Peyton Barber received the bulk of his team's carries but tallied a paltry 23 yards on 14 attempts. Barber did, however, rush for a score in the winning effort.
J.D. McKissic, who totaled eight yards on five carries against Pittsburgh, is expected to begin Sunday's game as Washington's first-choice backfield option.
