San Francisco 49ers rookie kicker Jake Moody might be one of the biggest question marks on their roster.

But he made quite a big statement early in the second quarter of Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs when he not only opened the scoring to give his team a 3-0 lead, but by doing so with a Super Bowl record kick.

His successful 55-yard kick set an NFL record for longest Super Bowl field, breaking the previous mark set by Buffalo Bills kicker Steve Christie in Super Bowl XXVII. That kick was good from 54 yards.

The 49ers selected Moody in the third-round (No. 99 overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft. Most teams do not take kickers that high in the draft, and when they do there is an expectation for them to not only be good, but also game-changing kickers. It does not always work out that way.

The overall depth of the 49ers roster and their lack of holes elsewhere gave them the flexibility to take a kicker that high.

Moody missed four field goals (and one extra point) during the regular season. He also missed a field goal in each of the 49ers' first two playoff games.

He did not miss a chance to set a Super Bowl record.
