Watch: Aaron Donald gets chummy with Dolphins HC at UFC event

Tampering allegations linked to quarterback Tom Brady cost the Miami Dolphins their 2023 first-round pick, so surely the team doesn’t want to risk its 2024 first rounder for another violation, right?

While it was likely nothing more than harmless banter, a video showing Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald sharing a moment at UFC 287 in Miami over the weekend made the rounds on Twitter, prompting some to wonder if Miami should be expecting another call from the NFL league office.

McDaniel and Dolphins general manager Chris Grier were in attendance for the event, as were Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Baltimore Ravens receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and more.

McDaniel boldly claimed in March at the NFL Combine that he was “not in the business of tampering” after avoiding a question relating to Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer, who was reported to be interested in joining the Dolphins.

While Donald hasn’t been publicly linked to the Dolphins at any point during the offseason, the obvious connection is there after Miami traded for ex-Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey in mid-March. Ramsey and Donald were teammates for the last three and a half seasons.

If Donald is on the trade block, the Dolphins likely don’t have the trade ammunition to pull of such a deal. They forfeited their first rounder this year in the tampering case and traded away their other for edge rusher Bradley Chubb, leaving them with just a second rounder, two thirds, a sixth and a seventh rounder this year.

While Miami has its first and second rounders in 2024, the team also forfeited its third rounder in the tampering case and traded its fourth rounder to Denver in the Chubb trade.
