Watch: Bengals trick play backfires in worst way

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd might want to stick to running routes.

The Bengals were the only ones that looked like fools on their trick play in the third quarter against the Jaguars on "Monday Night Football."

In a game tied at 21, quarterback Jake Browning tossed a backward lateral to Boyd, who attempted to throw the ball across the field to running back Joe Mixon on a screen pass but instead threw it right to Jaguars linebacker Josh Allen, who returned the ball inside the Bengals' 10-yard line.

Jacksonville scored a touchdown four plays later on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line to take a 28-21 lead.

The play wasn't the only ineffective pass by a Bengals wideout in the game. Earlier, Ja'Marr Chase completed a pass to Browning that lost seven yards. Other than those two throws, Cincinnati threw the ball well with Browning, who was 20-of-23 for 260 yards and a touchdown through three quarters.

The Bengals should probably do more of that and less of whatever it was they tried to do with Boyd and Chase.
