Watch: D.J. Moore's celebration penalty costs Panthers, wastes miracle play

Carolina Panthers wide receiver D.J. Moore made one of the plays of the day on Sunday, and it's only going to be remembered for what happened after.

Moore hauled in a miracle 62-yard touchdown pass from P.J. Walker to tie the game at 34 with less than 25 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. He was so fired up for the catch that he ripped his helmet off and threw it in celebration.

The problem: This is a penalty for excessive celebration, and it cost the Panthers 15 yards on the extra point. That turned a routine extra point into a 48-yard attempt, which was promptly shanked by kicker Eddy Piniero to send the game to overtime.

That kick would have almost certainly been good from the normal extra point distance.

Things got even more chaotic in overtime.

Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota was intercepted on the opening drive of overtime, giving Piniero and the Panthers a chance at redemption with a potential game-winning field goal.

Piniero also missed that 32-yard attempt.

That allowed Atlanta to drive down the field and set up Younghoe Koo for a game-winning 41-yard field goal to give Atlanta 37-34 win.

That gives the Falcons a 4-4 record and moves them into sole possession for first place in the NFC South.
