Watch: George Pickens makes another wild catch as Steelers starters shine again

The Pittsburgh Steelers need to get more out of their offense this season, and they have to be thrilled with what their first-team starters did in the preseason.

With two touchdowns on Thursday night against the Atlanta Falcons, the Steelers starting offense scored five touchdowns on five possessions over the three games. The first touchdown on Thursday was on a 92-yard drive to open the game that was highlighted by two perfect deep balls thrown by starting quarterback Kenny Pickett. The second of those resulted in another incredible catch from second-year wide receiver George Pickens, who is starting to make a habit out of making plays like this downfield.

Just one play later, Najee Harris capped off the drive with the touchdown run.

The Steelers' other key running back, Jaylen Warren, scored a touchdown on the next series that was set up by a big punt return by second-year wide receiver Calvin Austin.

The big story here, and for the preseason as a whole, is just how efficient the offense has looked and especially Pickett at quarterback.

He went 4-of-4 for 86 yards on Thursday, bringing his three-game preseason totals to 13-of-15 for 199 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. If you are scoring at home, that is a perfect 158.3 passer rating over those three preseason games.

There are two important things to keep in mind with all of those numbers. First, this is preseason, and there always needs to be some caution with what teams do in these games. Second, in two of these three games — the first game against Tampa Bay and this game against Atlanta — came against their opponents' backup defenses as they did not play their starters.

Even with that being the case, Pickett and the offense still looked impressive. No matter who he was playing against, he showed an ability to hit passes downfield that he consistently missed as a rookie, and has also been fitting passes into very tight windows with tight coverage. With improved offensive line play and some added skill-position players, the Steelers look like they at least have the potential to be a significantly better team on offense.
