Watch: Lions surprise franchise legend with upcoming honor

As if there wasn't enough buzz and excitement surrounding the 2023 Detroit Lions, the franchise announced during Friday's preseason victory over the New York Giants that they'll be inducting a new honoree into the "Pride of the Lions," the franchise's ring of honor, this season.

On Oct. 30 during a Monday Night Football showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders, long-time Lions offensive tackle Lomas Brown will have his name and jersey No. 75 unveiled on a suite balcony at Ford Field honoring the greatest players to ever don the Honolulu blue and silver. Brown will be the 20th player added, joining the likes of Hall of Famers Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, to name a couple.

Some would call this honor in Detroit long overdue. Brown played a vital role in the Lions' moderate success throughout his 1985-1995 stint, including the Lions' most recent playoff victory in the 1991 postseason and most recent division title in 1993. He made a career most notably by run-blocking for Sanders, who led the NFL in rushing yards twice during Brown's tenure and is having a statue unveiled outside of Ford Field on Sept. 16.

Since 2018, Brown has worked alongside the great radio play-by-play broadcaster Dan Miller as the color analyst for Lions games. It was during a break in Friday's broadcast that Lions president Rod Wood surprised Brown with the announcement on the Jumbotron for all the fans to see as well.

As far as accolades go, Brown earned All-Pro honors five times as a Lion and represented the NFC in seven consecutive Pro Bowls from 1990-96. In his 18th and final NFL season, he won Super Bowl XXXVII with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring in 2003.
