Following every NFL game in 2025, Steel City Underground parses the best plays from the Pittsburgh Steelers to highlight for Steelers Nation fans to rewatch, complete with what led up to the big play.
Just two days removed from a joint practice that featured nearly every player from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – including quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Baker Mayfield – the two teams met at Acrisure Stadium for their second NFL Preseason game. While the Steelers fell, 17-14, due to a late Bucs field goal, there were a few players in the black and gold that stood out, including receiver Roman Wilson.
Wilson has looked strong throughout camp, and on Saturday was able to haul-in two deep passes on great routes.
His first catch was a 42-yard gain over the deep middle on a pass from Mason Rudolph in a late first quarter drive that was capped-off with a short 2-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Johnson.

During the next Steelers offensive series, also in the first quarter, quarterback Skylar Thompson spotted Wilson deep right with tight end Darnell Washington deeper in position to block and lofted the ball. Wilson, in stride, adjusted to make the catch and tiptoed along the sideline before running out of bounds for a 30-yard gain.

Wilson led all Steelers receivers in yardage in the game as well as offensive skill players. Fellow receivers Roc Taylor and Scotty Miller had 39 and 38 yards, respectively. Running backs Kaleb Johnson (50 rushing and 9 receiving yards) and Lew Nichols (42 rushing and 6 receiving) had the next largest total gains.
