We already know which Dallas Cowboys training camp battle will be the most exciting and the 2025 NFL Draft hasn't even happened

We're currently trapped in between the slowing-down days of free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft, which means there isn't really plenty of news about. But who's stopping us from looking ahead a little bit and glancing at the Dallas Cowboys roster?

Looking at the Cowboys depth chart today, I believe it's clear which will be the most exciting training camp battle regardless of what route the front office takes in the early rounds of April's Draft: Defensive end.

We know Micah Parsons will spearhead the group once again (Seriously, let's not fall for the narrative about him switching to linebacker again, yeah?). But who will be No. 2?

It won't be decided until training camp but we've got ourselves a strong group of candidates:

  • Dante Fowler Jr.: During his two seasons in Dallas, he was a solid No. 3/4 behind Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence and he's fresh off of spending the 2024 season as a starter for Dan Quinn and logging 10.5 sacks. He's proven he can start at the NFL level still and with Parsons on his side, more one-on-one opportunities should be available.
  • Marshawn Kneeland: The second-year player is expected to make a sophomore jump in the pass rush department. Seen as a solid run defender out of college with pass rush upside, Kneeland has a shot at landing the starting gig. Developing him will be high on DL coach Aaron Whitecotton's priority list.
  • Sam Williams: It's been a rollercoaster of a career for Williams. As a rookie, his production was great in limited playing time. But discipline and injuries have cost him playing time, including a missed 2024 season. But when he's on the field, he makes an impact. If healthy, Williams could be the best player in the competition. But he's a question mark after a torn ACL.

More competition could be added in the NFL Draft because you can never have too many edge rushers in this league. However, this is already set to be a fun battle to watch out for during the offseason.

If I had to pick a favorite, I'd point to Fowler Jr. He's got the most experience and is a proven veteran at this point. Ideally, Kneeland makes a statement as he's more meaningful to the Cowboys' long-term future. Buckle up, it'll be a fun one.
