We Are in Tua Purgatory

It is again painfully apparent that the Miami Dolphins must move on from Tua Tagovailoa as soon as possible.

Of course, former General Manager Chris Grier has placed the Dolphins’ decision-makers in handcuffs from a quarterback perspective through the 2026 season.

Granted, we could follow the lead of the Atlanta Falcons, who essentially benched Kirk Cousins in favor of Michael Penix until the latter was hurt.

But watching the other games played on Sunday and watching the quarterback play, the Dolphins are way behind most teams.

Tua may be the only starting quarterback in the NFL who cannot execute a simple slide for a first down.

That is pathetic.

And it is excruciating to watch.

And, of course, Tua’s performance during the Monday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers was yet another embarrassment by our so-called “franchise” quarterback.

My hope as a fan is that Tua is benched for the remainder of the 2025 season and that the Dolphins plan to replace him, either through an unlikely trade or, preferably, the draft.

Hell, why not go all-in with giving up our 2026 higher draft picks and move up to get the Heisman Trophy winner, Fernando Mendoza, should he become eligible for the draft?

Mendoza is from Miami and has the size, accuracy, and athletic ability to excel at the NFL level.

Like what Coach Mike Ditka did to get Ricky Williams in the 1999 draft, but not quite to that extent.

The bottom line is that Tua Tagovailoa has been terrible in 2025 and is getting worse, not better.

The Dolphins need to admit that Grier got it wrong in 2020 and move on.

It is tough to admit a mistake, but the NFL is about winning, and the Dolphins do not win enough to achieve what every team wants: reaching the playoffs and winning the Super Bowl.

The Dolphins’ quarterback play must improve for that to become a reality.
