Last week’s quarterback starts and sits were a mixed bag. Michael Penix Jr., who was listed as a start last week, went on to have a top-10 week. The other start of the week, Trevor Lawrence, had a disappointing fantasy performance, as he scored just over ten points. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the worst call of the week, as Justin Herbert was listed as a sit, and he went on to have a top-five week at the position. So it wasn’t a great start to the season with starts and sits for quarterbacks, but as the season moves on, the matchups to target should become clearer every week.
With all of that being said, here are this week’s fantasy football starts and sits at the quarterback position
After a massive performance in week one where he threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for an additional 32 yards, Herbert finds himself in the starts instead of the sits this week.
Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers face off against the Las Vegas Raiders, who gave up the third most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks last year, with an average of 18.48. In two games against Las Vegas last season, the Chargers quarterback averaged just under 21 fantasy points per game. Those two games took place in weeks one and 18, so both teams were vastly different in each matchup, but it shows that this is a favorable matchup for Herbert.
In their week one matchup with the New England Patriots, the Raiders only allowed 13 points, and Drake Maye had just 16 fantasy points, but the Los Angeles offense is much better than New England’s. With a good trio of receivers, Herbert should be able to exploit a weak Las Vegas secondary and put up big-time numbers once again.
Drake Maye was a lot of people’s favorite breakout quarterback entering the season, and while he had a fine week one, it wasn’t what people had hoped for. Despite attempting 46 passes, he had just 16 points in a plus matchup with the Raiders.
In week two, Maye will have another chance to put together a strong fantasy performance against the Miami Dolphins, who just allowed a quarterback-three finish to Daniel Jones, who scored just under 30 fantasy points. Miami was the worst matchup for quarterbacks last season on a per-game basis, as they allowed 11.31 fantasy points per game, but that was not the case in week one. The Dolphins looked terrible on both sides of the ball, and if that carries over to week two, Maye should be able to have a bounce-back performance.
If you need to stream a quarterback, or are deciding between Maye and a player such as Jared Goff or Michael Penix Jr., lean towards the New England signal caller in a great matchup.
After a near 30-point performance and quarterback three finish from Daniel Jones in week one, he will likely be a popular streaming name in week two, but managers should pump the brakes. The Denver Broncos have one of the league’s best defenses, and the entire unit just wrecked Cam Ward’s NFL debut.
Denver allowed just 15 points per game to fantasy quarterbacks last season, and they allowed just 2.48 points in week one. Jones will score more than 2 points, but anyone hoping for another strong performance should severely temper their expectations. The Dolphins looked like a mess, and the Indianapolis Colts capitalized on both sides of the ball. Denver didn’t look great on offense, but they looked much better than Miami, and the game between Indianapolis and the Broncos should be much closer.
If you need a streamer this week, look towards the likes of Maye and Trevor Lawrence, as opposed to week one superstar Jones.
Dak Prescott played great in week one against the Philadelphia Eagles, but it didn’t result in fantasy success, and there is a strong chance that happens again this week.
The New York Giants have a very good defense, and that showed in week one as they held the Washington Commanders to just 21 points and Jayden Daniels to just 20 points. On the offensive side, the Giants’ offense only scored six points, thus limiting the need to pour on points from Washington. It feels likely that there will be a similar outcome against the Cowboys this week, and that could negatively impact Dak Prescott’s fantasy ceiling.
Last year, in a week four game against New York, Prescott completed 22 of his 27 pass attempts, but he threw for just 221 yards and two touchdowns. That performance was good for just under 17 fantasy points, and while that is solid, it isn’t a week-winning performance for fantasy. The Giants ate up the clock and limited Dallas’s possessions, and the game script could play out the same way this week.
Prescott will be solid this week, but his ceiling could be capped, and if there are better options available, don’t be afraid to throw him on the bench for a week.
The quarterback position is such a weird one in fantasy because the expectation is that they will all score points, but that is not the case. Some are weekly superstars, but for most, there are a lot of ups and downs throughout the season, and that is largely due to matchups. For week two, these are the players who have a good chance to outperform their expectations, as well as players who could disappoint based on their fantasy expectations.
