There were plenty of out-of-nowhere performances like Baltimore Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely and San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason’s during Week 1 of the NFL season.
Here are the top players who should be targeted on the waiver wire for Week 2:
1. Jordan Mason, RB, San Francisco 49ers (rostered in 37.4% of ESPN leagues)
Mason isn’t a long-term solution for any fantasy owner, but after his impressive outing in Monday’s 32-19 win over the New York Jets, he’s well worth an add next week, especially if Christian McCaffrey misses another game like ESPN’s Adam Schefter alluded to during Monday’s broadcast.
The 24-year-old Mason ran roughshod over the Jets defense to the tune of 147 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. While the 49ers might dial back his rushing attempts against the Vikings next weekend, Mason is still a good bet to put up between 75 and 100 yards rushing, and given his physical running style, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him score another touchdown or two in short-yardage situations near the end zone.
2. Isaiah Likely, TE, Baltimore Ravens (rostered in 10.5% of ESPN leagues)
Fantasy owners were presumably putting in waiver claims for Likely even before Thursday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs was over. The 24-year-old tight end logged nine receptions, 111 yards and a touchdown, and he came one big toe away from hauling in another score.
Mark Andrews looks to still be recovering from a cracked fibula injury suffered last season, and if Likely continues to get double-digit targets, he could pass Andrews as Baltimore’s new TE1. Given the Ravens’ commitment to passing the ball, Likely is a must-add for any fantasy owner who doesn’t already have Travis Kelce, George Kittle or Sam LaPorta.
3. Brandin Cooks, WR, Dallas Cowboys (rostered in 29.7% of ESPN leagues)
Because he shares a field with CeeDee Lamb, most people tend to forget about Cooks. And while he’s not the same player who posted six 1,000-yard seasons in a seven-year window from 2015-21, he’s still a really good WR3/flex option.
In Sunday’s 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns, Cooks caught four of seven targets for 40 yards and a touchdown. He scored eight touchdowns last season — tied for the eighth-most in the NFL in 2023 and the second-most of his career — and despite Lamb’s big season, he still saw 81 targets. Cooks is worth grabbing now either as a flex play or as a lineup filler during bye weeks or as an injury replacement.
4. Tank Bigsby, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars (rostered in 4.6% of ESPN leagues)
Travis Etienne will still get his touches — at least for now — but Bigsby’s 73-yard rushing performance in Week 1 showed the Jags have another option if Etienne struggles like he did against the Miami Dolphins.
However, Jacksonville might deploy Etienne more in goal-line situations and as a receiver while using Bigsby as a change-of-pace back on early downs. Bisgby could be worth an add right now before he puts together a few more solid performances and is on everyone’s radar. He could be a worthwhile flex play or as a RB2 if dealing with injuries but he won’t be on the waiver wire much longer into the season.
5. Jaylen Wright, RB, Miami Dolphins (rostered in 22.2% of ESPN leagues)
Both De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert did not practice on Tuesday, and while there’s probably a better chance one or both play this weekend than they don’t, Wright is someone to monitor carefully.
The Dolphins have shown they will ride whoever the hot hand is at running back, and if both Achane and Mostert miss Week 2, their carries will go to Jeff Wilson Jr. and Wright. The former is much more dynamic of a runner and has higher upside in terms of production and scoring, which is why he could be a sneaky good add for someone in Week 2.
