Week 5 waiver targets: Beat the 'bye week blues' with these top options

This week’s waiver wire should be busier than ever with five NFL teams getting the week off. These players may get you through and even over your fantasy opponent. (Fantasy stats via Yahoo!Sports).

TE Darren Waller | Miami Dolphins

Waller retired in 2024, then signed with the Dolphins only to suffer a hip injury that kept him out for four games.

The 33-year-old tight end caught three of four targets for 27 yards and two touchdowns in the team’s 27-21 win over the New York Jets on a night the team lost wide receiver Tyreek Hill to a dislocated knee.

Waller’s 17.70 fantasy points were fourth-most among tight ends in Week 4. Next week he’ll face the Carolina Panthers, who gave up a touchdown and 11.90 fantasy points to tight end Hunter Henry in a 42-13 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Waller remains available in 92 percent of leagues.

RB Woody Marks | Houston Texans

Houston won its first game of the year on Sunday, thanks largely to the efforts of their rookie running back. Marks led the team with 17 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown and had four catches for 50 yards and another score in the team’s 26-0 victory over the
Tennessee Titans.

Marks’ 27.90 fantasy points were sixth-most among running backs and well above teammate Nick Chubb (8.2) who had 13 carries for 47 yards. Chubb isn’t going anywhere, but it’s telling that both of Marks’ scores came in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s contest.

Marks remains available in 69 percent of leagues.

WR Darius Slayton | New York Giants

The Giants will be without leading receiver Malik Nabers for the rest of the season after their former first-round pick suffered a torn Achilles tendon against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Statistically, Wan’Dale Robinson has been the team’s No. 2 receiver through four games, but the majority of his numbers (18 catches, 237 yards) came in Week 2 (eight catches, 142 yards, one touchdown) against the Dallas Cowboys.

Slayton had two catches for 61 yards that day and is sure to get more deep looks with Nabers on the sidelines. A fifth-round pick in 2019, Slayton put up modest numbers in 2024 (39 catches, 573 yards, two scores) but led Giants receivers by averaging 14.7 yards per reception.

This week, New York will face the New Orleans Saints, who gave up a combined 75 points to the Seattle Seahawks and Buffalo Bills over the past two weeks. The Giants won’t approach that number, but if Slayton can get on the same page as rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, he should have success against a Saints team allowing 30.3 points per game.

Slayton remains available in 98 percent of leagues.

QB Matthew Stafford | Los Angeles Rams

Stafford completed 29-of-41 passes for a league-high 375 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-20 win over the previously unbeaten Indianapolis Colts on Sunday and will look to stay hot against the San Francisco 49ers, who fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 26-21 in Week 3.

His 27.40 fantasy points in Week 4 were second only to the Cowboys’ Dak Prescott (30.96) who’s also the only quarterback with more yards (1,119) than the Rams’ 37-year-old passer (1,114). Stafford does have the edge in touchdowns (eight) over Prescott (six) through four games, but while Prescott is rostered in 92 percent of leagues, Stafford usually goes undrafted.

With quarterbacks like Jordan Love, Aaron Rodgers and Caleb Williams sitting out Week 5, fantasy managers could do worse than add the 10th-leading passer (60,923 yards) in NFL history to their rosters.

Stafford remains available in 58 percent of leagues.
