The Dallas Cowboys are not playing it safe this offseason, and it shows. After a trembling 2025 campaign on defence, the message from inside the building is clear that changes are coming, and they are not subtle.

However, here is the twist. While the focus is locked on fixing a broken defense, the Cowboys are not closing the door on adding more firepower. In fact, they might be setting themselves up to do both.

Brian Schottenheimer Signals Flexible Draft Strategy as Dallas Cowboys Go Aggressive

Speaking on March 26, 2026, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer laid out the team’s draft mindset, and it is all about balance and not tunnel vision.

“You want to be prepared to do what we need to do on defense, but certainly, we’re not going to pass on a great offensive player if they’re there.”

That statement sums up the Cowboys’ approach heading into the 2026 NFL Draft. Yes, defence is the priority. However, they are not drafting desperately, they are drafting smart.

And the defensive need is real.

The Cowboys ranked near the bottom of the league in 2025, finishing 30th in total yards allowed. That forced a philosophical reset, starting with new defensive coordinator Christian Parker and a transition to a 3-4 base scheme. That shift demands different personnel, longer edge rushers, more versatile linebackers, and physical corners.

Names like Jermod McCoy and C.J. Allen are already being linked to the Cowboys within the first two rounds of picks. Both fit the mold, and both address immediate weaknesses. However, here is where things get interesting.

As the defence is being rebuilt, the offence is not off-limits. With stars like CeeDee Lamb already in place, adding another top weapon could turn this unit into a nightmare matchup. Some projections even have the Cowboys targeting USC wideout Makai Lemon late in the first round, a move that would signal pure aggression.

And that lines up with the front office’s new philosophy. Led by Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones, the Cowboys have shifted away from conservative roster building. This offseason has already proved it. Trades for pass rusher Rashan Gary and the signing of safety Jalen Thompson shows a clear “win-now” mindset.

The goal is to eliminate desperation before the draft night. Stephen Jones has emphasized a “draft-pure” approach, meaning fill major holes early through free agency, then let the board dictate decisions. That is how you stay flexible and avoid reaching.

And that is exactly what Schottenheimer echoed. The Cowboys want options and leverage. And most importantly, they want impact players, regardless of which side of the ball they play on.

So while defence will likely rule the early picks, do not rule out a surprise. Because if the right offensive talent is sitting there, the Cowboys won’t hesitate. This is not a rebuild. It is a reload with real intent.
