What is Xavier Legette’s Future As a Panther?

Xavier Legette came out of South Carolina University as an athletic freak that looked ready to take the NFL by storm. 

With impressive combine statistics like a 4.39 40 yard dash and a 40 inch vertical, the Carolina Panthers felt it necessary to trade up to pick No. 32 in the 2024 NFL Draft to pick Legette, making him the last pick in the first round. 

Legette entered into a great situation for a young receiver looking to prove himself. The Panthers had no true top wide receiver on the roster and a young quarterback in Bryce Young that was starved for supporting talent. 

Panthers fans quickly began dreaming of the partnership between Young and Legette that could potentially steer their franchise in the right direction. However, what ended up happening played out very differently. 

A disappointing first two seasons 

Legette’s first season was certainly not what fans hoped for from the first round draft pick. Although he showed flashes of why the Panthers traded up for him, he ultimately finished the season with 49 receptions, 497 yards and only four touchdowns. 

The Panthers elected to spend their No. 8 pick in the 2025 season on wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan out of the University of Arizona. McMillan was a physical specimen at 6-feet-4-inches with great hands and an undeniable red-zone presence that drew in comparisons to star receiver Drake London. 

McMillan being brought in as the physical route runner gave Legette the opportunity to possibly flourish as a potential wide receiver two with his speed and athleticism. While his production as the No. 1 option did not pan out, he and McMillan could have formed a formidable wide receiver duo in the NFL. 

Again however, that did not pan out for Legette. His second season was even more disappointing than his first. While McMillan set the record for most receiving yards for a Panthers rookie receiver in a season, Legette’s production noticeably dipped. 

Legette finished his second season with worse stats across the board, grabbing 35 receptions for 363 yards and only three touchdowns. Furthermore, injury concerns started to spring up throughout the season as Legette missed two games. 

During Legette’s sophomore slump, Young began forming a connection with undrafted third-year receiver Jalen Coker. Coker matched Legette’s production with 33 receptions, 394 yards and three touchdowns in the regular season despite playing five less games. 

The playoffs truly solidified Coker’s spot on the team, as he torched the Rams secondary for nine catches, 134 yards and a touchdown in the Wildcard loss. 

An untimely injury

The Panthers have reportedly continued to back Legette coming into the 2026 season, with hopes he can still compete for a spot with Jalen Coker and rookie receiver Chris Brazzell. However, two injuries in the preseason have set Legette back quite a bit. 

Legette first suffered a minor upper body injury that saw him get carted off the field in early August. He showed flashes after returning, but then he suffered a foot and ankle injury in a joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Legette has since been seen wearing a boot on the injured foot, with head coach Dave Canales saying they hope to get it off him before the start of the regular season. 

However, Legette is likely to miss the first game of the season because of the injury. Depending on how the offense plays without him on the field, the Panthers could decide that it is time to move on from the inconsistent wide receiver and trade him before the deadline. 

This is Legette’s last chance to make an impact on the Panthers, and it is an uphill battle from this point on. With McMillan and Coker both showing no signs of slowing down, Legette has a lot of ground to cover to carve out a role in Carolina.
