The 2025 campaign will be the third for Jordan Love as the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. Love surprised a lot of people with his strong finish to the 2023 season. In the second half of the campaign, he played at a level that was as good as any quarterback in the NFL. But last year, Love did not take a major step forward. Today we will discuss what Packers quarterback Jordan Love needs to do to take the next step forward in 2025.
The Packers selected Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The former Utah State star spent three years on the bench behind Aaron Rodgers. But when Rodgers’ play fell off in 2022, and his off the field issues continued, the Packers traded him to the New York Jets prior to the 2023 campaign.
Love took over as the starter and became the leader of the youngest team in the NFL. He had no receivers or tight ends on his roster with more than one season of NFL experience that season. Love and his receivers struggled through an inconsistent first half of the season. They made mistakes in route running, a lack of accuracy on longer passes, and too many drops.
However, in the final eight games of the season, Love and his receivers seemed to all take a step forward together. The young quarterback threw 18 touchdown passes and just one interception while leading the young team to a surprise playoff berth. In the first round of the playoffs, Love nearly had a perfect playoff rating in an upset win over the Cowboys.
However, in 2024, Love’s numbers were only moderately better than his 2023 season stats. His quarterback rating increased slightly from 96.1 to 96.7. But the consistent level of excellence he had in the final eight games of 2023 was not there.
Injuries most likely played a role in Love’s lack of sustained excellence in 2024. He suffered a knee injury during the final drive of the season opener against the Eagles and missed two games. Two other injuries cost him parts of two more games later in the season. His receivers also dropped a lot of passes which didn’t help the team sustain drives.
Still, Love has work to do to take his game to the next level in 2025. At OTAs last week, offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich discussed what he was looking for from Love this season.
“For him, it’s consistency in everything he does, improving accuracy, improving his footwork and just really taking command of another step in the offense,” Stenavich said. “We talked with all these guys, doing a great job communicating with each other, quarterback to receiver, quarterback to O-line and just making sure everyone’s on the same page with each other, not necessarily coach to player but player to player.”
The footwork and accuracy that Stenavich mentioned are related. We’ve seen even Hall of Fame-caliber quarterbacks like Brett Favre and Rodgers have issues with their footwork that diminished their accuracy. With Love, his precision on deeper throws needs more work in particular.
Love also needs to work on reading defenses a bit better and emerging as a more vocal leader, which head coach Matt LaFleur discussed after the 2024 campaign ended. This will be Love’s third season as the starter, and he has established himself in that role. The team will be looking to him for leadership.
Finally, Love needs to find that sweet spot when it comes to risk taking. He doesn’t want to be too daring and make bad throws that lead to turnovers, but he also cannot be too safe and constantly throw checkdown passes. If Love can learn when to take calculated chances, the offense will be both more efficient and create more big plays.
How quickly Love manages to improve in these areas will be the key for him going from a very good quarterback to one of the best in the league. He has the athletic tools and the work ethic. Now he needs to find the consistency to get his game to the next level.
