What Seattle Seahawks GM said about rookie QB Jalen Milroe after first practice sessions, ‘he’s got some wow…’

The Seattle Seahawks are hoping that former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe will be the future of the franchise. While fans aren’t expecting to see him play anytime soon, the general consensus on the pick so far is extremely positive.

Jalen Milroe landed in an ideal spot with the Seattle Seahawks, with zero pressure to play immediately. The franchise signed quarterback Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract in the offseason, and he is expected to feature for at least the first year.

Jalen Milroe has ticked all the boxes in Seattle so far

The Seahawks selected Milroe with the 92nd pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft. He came out of college with a host of explosive plays, but was also considered a very raw prospect with a lot he needed to tidy up.

Ultimately, he was a project quarterback, whose ceiling could be immaculate if he is able to reach it. Landing in the right situation was essential, and Seattle is the perfect destination.

His situation resembles that of Anthony Richardson, who had very limited experience coming out of college and needed time to develop. Instead, he was thrust into the starting role in Week 1 of his rookie year, and has since struggled to find any kind of rhythm.

The Seahawks will avoid making the same mistake, given the $100 million quarterback they just signed to start immediately.

Sam Darnold is coming off of the best year of his career in Minnesota, setting new career highs with 4,319 passing yards and 35 touchdowns. His previous career highs were 3,024 passing yards and 19 TDs, both set in his second season with the New York Jets in 2019.

Jalen Milroe will be able to sit and learn for at least a full season, if not two. The Seahawks, and head coach Mike MacDonald want to do right by him, and wait until he’s ready to unleash him.

During an interview on the Rich Eisen show, Seattle GM Rob Schneider had plenty of praise for the rookie QB:

“He’s got some of those wows and some of those woahs, and then all of a sudden he takes off, scoring from 50, 60, 70 yards running 22 miles an hour with the ball in his hand too.”

The GM continued, talking about the young player’s attitude and personality:

“He’s a special young man. He’s been great so far. Everybody raved about the work ethic and his personality.”

Eisen confirmed that they loved him too when they interviewed him, and it seems the young quarterback now has a support system around him that might allow him to reach the potential fans are so desperate to see.

Milroe’s raw talent and the things he needs to tidy up

As Schneider said, Jalen Milroe is exceptionally talented. He has the speed to blow by an entire defense with the ball in his hands, and has utilized that throughout his college career.

At Alabama, he scored 32 rushing touchdowns in the past two seasons, including a stunning 20 in 2024 alone. That number put him sixth among all players in college football last season.

The inconsistencies come via turnovers and inaccuracies. Milroe may have scored 32 touchdowns on the ground, but he also fumbled the football 17 times in that same two-year span.

In the passing game, he has the arm to make every throw, with 36 passing TDs in his two years as the Crimson Tide’s starting QB. In the same time frame, he threw 16 interceptions.

If Milroe can fine tune his technique and the fundamentals that make a great NFL quarterback, he could be a superb starting QB when his time finally comes.

Seahawks fans will just need to be patient. If Seattle start losing, the chances of a switch from Darnold to Milroe in the 2025 season seem very slim. It’s not impossible, but fans should observe the Anthony Richardson situation before showing any urgency to put Jalen Milroe out on the field.
