What the Bill Belichick decision means for the Patriots

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are parting ways.

Belichick’s 24-year tenure with New England is the greatest in NFL coaching history. He led the team to 17 AFC East titles, nine conference championships and six Super Bowl titles.

Belichick’s departure means that New England’s 2024 offseason might be the busiest in franchise history.

The Patriots must not only find a head coach and conduct dozens of interviews for a new staff, but they must also find a new starting quarterback, new receivers and new offensive linemen. Each of those positions — especially QB, where they have the underwhelming Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones — are below league standards.

Additionally, with important players such as tight ends Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki, safety Kyle Dugger, running back Ezekiel Elliott and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne entering free agency, the Patriots are going to be busy trying to retain them and others.

Unless New England hires former Patriots player Mike Vrabel, who was fired as head coach of the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday, the person hired could be unfamiliar with how the team usually operates.

The impact that Belichick left on the Patriots can't be summed up in a news conference, but the Patriots are going to try their best. Owner Robert Kraft and Belichick are scheduled to meet with the media at noon ET on Thursday. It figures to be an emotional and powerful event.

With scores of tasks ahead of them and only a few months to complete them, the Patriots front office will have little time to dwell on the fact that the greatest coach in NFL history is exiting their doors.
