Things have shifted quite a lot for the New York Jets as we are now within two weeks of the 2026 NFL draft.
If you believe the rumors, that is.
Long considered a lock, New York’s second overall pick has become a toss-up. Instead of Ohio State’s Arvell Reese, Vegas now has Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey as the favorite to be chosen at No. 2.
Even New York’s supposed interest in quarterbacks has changed. From potentially being in on Ty Simpson to not wanting to take a quarterback until the fourth round, plans are apparently moving quickly in Florham Park.
That’s exactly what the Jets want you to think, though.
Since being hired in January of 2025, general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn have worked hard to limit the amount of leaks in and out of the team facility. Ahead of last year’s draft, they successfully kept people in suspense before selecting tackle Armand Membou with the seventh overall pick.
That suspense was felt even this offseason with unexpected trades for Minkah Fitzpatrick and T’Vondre Sweat.
All signs point to the latest rumors being entirely by the Jets’ design.
After months of being the favorite for the No. 2 pick, Reese has recently seen his stock fall behind that of Bailey, with several prominent reporters coming out and calling it a done deal.
“Yeah, I actually talked to a couple teams that almost talked like [the Jets taking Bailey] was a fait accompli,” Albert Breer said on the Todd McShay show. “Now, we’ll see. The information gets better, a little better, as you get closer to the draft, and these guys are coming out of their meetings.”
This was echoed by NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah and ESPN’s Peter Schrager.
Then there’s the 16th overall pick, where ESPN’s Jordan Reid claims the team prefers Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. over the likes of Arizona State wideout Jordyn Tyson.
“The Jets are expected to be aggressive in boosting their wide receivers room, and Omar Cooper Jr. (Indiana) is one player they are reported to be extremely high on,” Reid said. “They view him as an ideal complementary WR2 to Garrett Wilson.”
Is any of this surprising? Not exactly. The weeks leading up to the NFL draft are usually full of misleading rumors. At this time last year, the Jets were supposedly “infatuated” with tight end Tyler Warren, before passing on him in favor of tackle Armand Membou.
In 2024, tight end Brock Bowers was the favorite for weeks until the team took tackle Olu Fashanu with the 11th pick.
The conclusion? It’s important to remember how rumors running rampant can be a clear smokescreen.
The Jets don’t need to make any draft decisions yet. To say that they are sold on their selections seems premature at this point. Only the Las Vegas Raiders, who own the first pick, are locked into what they will do.
There’s still plenty of time for the team, in theory, to change their mind.
It also doesn’t mean that their draft plans aren’t obvious. New York primarily needs help at edge rusher and wide receiver. If they walk out with an edge rusher at second overall, there’s a good chance they’ll want a pass catcher when they make their next pick at 16.
Adam Schefter doesn’t need to tell you that.
But New York “moving in silence,” as their head coach so eloquently put it last season, has been a priority for this regime. Perceived interest in a player could very well be just a smokescreen to try to bring a team to the negotiating table.
There’s always a reason for rumors to run rampant this time of year before the draft. Some teams have leaks in the boat, allowing it to become clear exactly where they are heading, while others want to leave things up in the air for other suitors to come calling.
If Mougey and the Jets have shown anything, they prefer being in the latter group.
