With Cowboys new defensive coordinator Christian Parker in the building and already getting to work building his staff, I am sure many are wondering what we should expect to see from his defense?
Well, Parker is a first-time defensive coordinator and that is okay. He has done nothing but made players in the secondary thrive while he was the coach in Denver and with the Eagles.
As of right now, it might be hard to exactly pinpoint what type of defense Parker will run with Dallas because personnel does matter, but I was reading some other pieces and I got some good ideas.
Will McClay also praised Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer for leading an exhaustive and detailed search that landed Christian Parker to reporters at senior bowl:
“The exhaustive search that Schotty's done and all of us having a piece in it, much like we do during the process… https://t.co/FKVZb20Xvj pic.twitter.com/NxIX9yfFlT

My guess is that Parker will try and use some of the stuff he learned under Vic Fangio. He worked under him both with the Broncos and the Eagles as the secondary coach.
Defensively, Philadelphia had the #1 defense in yards allowed, was #1 against the pass and sixth in takeaways.
C.J. Gardner Johnson and Reed Blankenship, combined for 10 interceptions and 18 passes defended. Their 64.3% completion percentage allowed was good for third lowest in all of football.
With Matt Eberflus, Mike Zimmer and Dan Quinn, we saw a lot of one-high safeties, and if they can get the right players in the building, they will probably look to run with a two-high safety and, hopefully, the defense can start disguising coverage and create some takeaways.
We have seen Parker coach three players to the All-Pro list, but he now, before free agency and the draft, has DaRon Bland, Shavon Revel Jr., Caelen Carson, Josh Butler, Alijah Clark, Zion Childress, and Twikweze Bridges to work with.
Dallas should also use the big bodies they have to their advantage. Quinnen Williams, Osa Odighizuwa, and Kenny Clark — and two EDGE players, either standing up or putting a hand in the dirt.
It would be a thing known as a heavy box, light line, but the issue is going to be the guys they have in the secondary, but they now have a new coach to help out.
As of yesterday, the Cowboys hired a new cornerbacks coach, Ryan Smith.
He has been with the Cardinals for three years. He came to Arizona from Northwestern University, where he spent the 2022 season in the same role with the Wildcats.
Smith helped Arizona allow the fewest passing touchdowns in the NFL in the final 11 games in 2024. Before Arizona, he coached players like 2021 first-round pick Caleb Farley at the college level.
That is music to my ears. The Cardinals’ defense allowed the fewest passing touchdowns in the final 11 games of the season as a year ago, another really solid hire by this front office.
This is all going to be so interesting to keep in mind and track when free agency hits. The Cowboys will have a lot of staffers with former players from a lot of places.
We are already seeing good things from Parker as he let go of two guys on the defensive side of the ball after less than a week on the job.
Things are headed in the right direction, so now it is all about making sure you resign a few important players and bring them back, not only on defense, but on offense as well.
Let’s hope Jerry Jones has truly gotten the message and will start to make more moves like this and stop settling for lazy hires and gambling on players who will take a cheap deal and hope it works out.
We have a long way to go until August and September, but this is the best start to an offseason in a long time for the man running the show.
