All 32 teams would love a perfect season, but it's unlikely any team will match the 1972 Miami Dolphins. We predict the first loss of the 2025 season for each team.
Arizona gets a soft landing in 2025, visiting the rebuilding Saints in Week 1, followed by the home opener against Carolina. The Week 3 visit to the division rival 49ers will bring a new challenge, with San Francisco having some time to get healthier. While the Cardinals won both meetings last season, it could be difficult for Kyler Murray and company to continue their success against the 49ers defense.
The Falcons have an enticing divisional matchup vs. Tampa Bay in Week 1. The game could have huge implications for the division, and Michael Penix Jr. will need to be at his best. The following week could be even tough, as Penix faces Brian Flores and the vaunted Vikings defense. Minnesota is loaded up front, with key additions like Javon Hargrave, and young quarterback J.J. McCarthy has ample weapons around him.
Lamar Jackson's visit to Buffalo could be an AFC Championship preview. The Ravens fell to the Bills in last year's playoffs, despite an easy win during the regular season. The home team has won three of the last four matchups, and stopping a healthy Bills offense led by Josh Allen is a difficult task.
If Buffalo can get over the hump of a Week 1 game vs. Baltimore, they have a chance to go on an early run with four of their first five games at home against favorable opponents. That includes a visit to the Jets, and home games vs. the Dolphins, Saints, and Patriots. However, Week 6 stands as a possible trap game, as the Bills visit Atlanta just before their bye week. Michael Penix Jr. and the Falcons defense will need to be at their best, but it's not a game Josh Allen and the Bills can afford to overlook.
The Panthers will pay a visit to Jacksonville in Week 1, which will be head coach Liam Coen's debut. The Jaguars underachieved again last season, but have their fair share of offensive weapons, including rookie Travis Hunter, which could expose the Panthers' front seven without much cohesion. Carolina is hopeful quarterback Bryce Young continues the progress that he showed in the second half of last season, and has a chance to put up numbers against the Jaguars secondary.
The hype couldn't be much louder for new head coach Ben Johnson's arrival, and he knows the Vikings defense well after game planning for them with the Lions. Still, it's a tough matchup for Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams to open the season, especially on a Monday Night Football stage. Minnesota's elite front seven will test the new Bears offensive line interior.
The Bengals have gotten off to terrible starts over the last three seasons, but the football scheduling gods have given them a favorable break this year. They open the season against a rebuilding Browns squad, followed by the home opener vs. Jacksonville. Then the schedule gets much tougher, as Weeks 3-7 are at Minnesota, at Denver, vs. Detroit, at Green Bay, and vs. Pittsburgh. Going 3-2 during that stretch would be a solid result, and the rebuilding Bengals defense could have their hands full to start the run against Justin Jefferson and company.
The new Joe Flacco era starts in Week 1, hosting the Bengals. While Cleveland's defense looks strong again, led by Myles Garrett, the optimism doesn't carry over to the offense. Cincinnati's rebuilt defense presents a favorable opportunity for Flacco to get going, but the Browns won't be able to win in a shootout.
The 2025 NFL season kicks off in Philly, as the defending champs host Dallas. It's been a controversial offseason for the Cowboys, as they promoted Brian Schottenheimer to head coach and traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons after a holdout. The Parsons trade leaves the Cowboys defense shorthanded at the worst time, and it's a lot to ask Dak Prescott and company to keep up on the scoreboard in a road game.
Denver has an advantage at home playing at altitude, and that advantage has been even more pronounced early in the season as teams work themselves into shape. That makes a favorable Week 1 opener vs. Tennessee look even better. The Week 2 visit to Indianapolis could also be a feast for Denver's elite defense, facing Daniel Jones. Week 3 at the rival Chargers will be a tougher matchup, and the Bo Nix crew fell in both matchups by seven points last season.
The expectations remain high for the Lions despite their disappointing playoff result last season and the loss of both coordinators. Unfortunately, they face a rough start in Week 1 with a visit to Green Bay. The Packers look supercharged following the acquisition of Micah Parsons, as Jared Goff and the Lions offense try to make due following the loss of coordinator Ben Johnson.
There couldn't be more optimism for the Packers entering 2025 after adding Micah Parsons. His impact will be on display in the first two games, as the Packers host strong offenses in the Lions and Commanders. Those games are followed by visits to the Browns and Cowboys, two flawed teams. The Week 6 matchup vs. Cincy following the bye could be a shootout and chance for Jordan Love to pad his stats, before back-to-back tough road games at the Cardinals and Steelers. Pittsburgh's toughness could be difficult for Green Bay to withstand, with an elite pass rush led by T.J. Watt.
Houston showed some regression on offense last season, but a revamped offensive line and new offensive coordinator have the team optimistic. C.J. Stroud still has a tough opener at the Rams, who appear all-in this season after adding Davante Adams. Matthew Stafford sat out the preseason, but he has a chance to put up big numbers if he proves healthy.
The Colts are caught in between this season, already benching 2023 first-round pick Anthony Richardson in favor of Daniel Jones. Jones likely limits the team's upside, even with talented pieces around him, led by Jonathan Taylor. Miami disappointed last season, but their offense has a chance to be elite again when healthy. Mike McDaniel's offense, led by Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill, will be hard to top.
The Liam Coen era begins at home vs. Carolina, a very winnable game as the Panthers continue to rebuild. Week 2 looks like a bigger shootout in Cincinnati. Jacksonville has some major weaknesses on the backend of its defense, and it could be difficult for Trevor Lawrence to keep up with the Bengals' offense as he gets comfortable in the new offense.
The Chiefs open the year with a rough schedule, playing the Chargers in Brazil for the opener, followed by the home opener rematch against the defending champion Eagles. KC's offensive line is rebuilt, but it's also very young. That presents another tough matchup against the Eagles, and Patriots Mahomes will be without star wideout Rashee Rice for the first six games of the season due to suspension.
The Raiders and Patriots have major optimism for improvement this season, so it's an intriguing matchup in Week 1. The Pete Carroll era begins with a visit to one of his old stomping grounds in New England, while Mike Vrabel also begins his Patriots coaching career. The Patriots' defense looks improved with several expensive offseason additions, which could test the offensive line in front of new Raiders quarterback Geno Smith.
A Week 1 win vs. KC would be symbolic for a Chargers team that's trying to get over the hump of Kansas City in the AFC West. It promises to be an exciting game, but the Chargers might not have the energy on offense to keep up. LA's hunt for the AFC West could be determined in the first three weeks, as Justin Herbert and company open with three division games.
The Week 1 opener against Houston is the first test for a Rams team that's all-in, and fans are biting their lips after Matthew Stafford nursed a back ailment during training camp. A healthy Stafford should be able to overcome the Texans, and a visit to Tennessee in Week 2 is an even easier matchup. Going on the road against the Eagles in Week 3 is where the winning streak could halt, as Philly looks as tough up front as ever and Saquon Barkley could expose the rebuilt Rams linebacking corps.
There isn't much expected of the Dolphins after they took a step back last season, but the offense is still capable when healthy. A Week 1 visit to Indianapolis is favorable for Tua Tagovailoa and the offense to get off on the right foot, and the home opener in Week 2 vs. New England is also winnable. However, the Dolphins might not be ready for a win at Buffalo, with a rebuilt secondary against Josh Allen.
The J.J. McCarthy era officially begins in 2025 after the quarterback effectively had a redshirt year last season. A visit to Chicago in Week 1 presents an interesting challenge, but he has plenty of support with a revamped defense and superstar wideout Justin Jefferson. Home matchups against weak defenses in Atlanta and Cincinnati follow, and then the Vikings play back-to-back games in Europe against the Steelers and Browns. The Steelers' defense could be too much for the young McCarthy, as he's likely to be under pressure often.
Mike Vrabel hopes to make an instant impact with his new team, particularly on offense. However, it's the Patriots offense that could see the biggest turnaround with quarterback Drake Maye entering his second season and coordinator Josh McDaniels back in town. A season opener against the Raiders gives Maye a chance to build momentum, and he could also feast against the Dolphins defense in Week 2. However, the Dolphins offense is capable of winning in a shootout.
New head coach Kellen Moore is taking on a tough task as he tries to rebuild a young Saints offense. Spencer Rattler is set to open the season at quarterback, while the defense has also seen some changes, particularly in the secondary. The first four weeks present some major challenges vs. Arizona, vs. San Francisco, at Seattle, and at Buffalo. Week 5 looks more winnable, as the Giants' offense tries to find itself after changes at quarterback.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll has his back against the wall as he fights for his job. Russell Wilson is set to begin the season as the starting quarterback, and he's no longer capable of keeping up in a shootout. The Commanders enter Week 1 as heavy favorites and won both of last season's head-to-head matchups.
After the Jets failures with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, there's optimism of a new era led by Justin Fields. Unfortunately, he won't have time to get comfortable against his former team, Pittsburgh. Fields has the security blanket of running back Breece Hall, but it's a big ask for him to beat the Steelers defense in Week 1.
The defending Super Bowl Champs enter 2025 as a major contender again, but they won't have much time to get comfortable. The home opener vs. Dallas looks very winnable, but their next four matchups are tough: at Kansas City, vs. LA Rams, at Tampa Bay, and vs. Denver. The loss of multiple veterans on defense could make defeating strong offenses early in the season more difficult, and the Bucs have the defensive line to test Philly's offense in Week 4.
Aaron Rodgers is being counted on as a game manager in Pittsburgh, helping support a strong defense and running game. The opener at the Jets and Week 2 vs. Seattle are very winnable games for the elite defense. A revamped Patriots squad in Week 3 could be tougher, especially if Drake Maye makes strides in his sophomore season.
The 49ers are optimistic for a rebound season, but the start of the season could be difficult after losing multiple key pieces on defense and trying to overcome injuries on offense. Seattle ended a six-game streak of head-to-head victories by the 49ers back in November, and new faces in the secondary could be exposed by new Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold.
Seattle has a key Week 1 matchup against the rival 49ers, as the Sam Darnold era begins. The Seahawks should be able to take down the 49ers rebuilt defense, but Pittsburgh's defense presents a much tougher task, especially on the road.
The Bucs are favored to win the NFC South again, and the Week 1 visit to Atlanta will be key. The teams appear evenly matched, and Atlanta's strong offensive weapons led by Bijan Robinson could keep the Buccaneers front seven on their heels.
The Titans are very excited about No. 1 overall draft choice Cam Ward, but the start of his NFL career couldn't be much tougher. The Broncos developed into an elite defense last season, and a visit to Denver early in the season is even tougher as players work into shape.
Washington has a very favorable start to their season, hosting the Giants. Jayden Daniels and company should be able to have their way against New York's defense, but the task is tougher in Week 2 at Green Bay after the Packers added Micah Parsons.
