Where Brock Purdy Ranks Among Playoff Quarterbacks
USA TODAY Sports

Brock Purdy was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL during the regular season, but now that's over. Where does he rank among the quarterbacks who made the playoffs?

Let's start by naming the playoff quarterbacks Purdy definitely is better than.

THE BOTTOM TIER

1. Mason Rudolph. He's played a few good games in a row, but he's not a good quarterback, and never has had success in the playoffs.

2. Baker Mayfield. He's having a solid bounce-back season, but he's nothing special.

3. Tua Tagovailoa. He's good when he can get rid of the ball quickly, but he doesn't ad lib nearly as well as Purdy.

4. Jalen Hurts. Last year's outstanding season appears to be an outlier for him. This season, he reverted to the inconsistent quarterback he was the first two years of his career.

Now let's name the playoff quarterbacks who are definitely better than Purdy at this point in his career:

THE TOP TIER

1. Patrick Mahomes. He's the best quarterback of this generation and he's having a down season simply because the Chiefs lead the league in dropped passes.

2. Josh Allen. He makes a couple bad decisions every game, but no one wants to face him because he leads the league in touchdowns and he can run over defensive backs like he's Derrick Henry.

3. Lamar Jackson. He hasn't had much success in the playoffs, but his struggles could be attributed to former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who is gimmicky, as 49ers fans know. Now their offensive coordinator is Todd Monken, and Jackson is playing like the MVP of the league.

4. Matthew Stafford. He won a Super Bowl just two years ago and now he has two elite wide receivers and an elite running back.

5. Joe Flacco. He won a Super Bowl 11 years ago and he's 4-1 as the Browns starting quarterback. His playoff experience sets him apart, considering he has started a whopping 15 playoff games and won 10 of them.

Finally, let's name the quarterbacks in Purdy's tier.

THE MIDDLE TIER

1. C.J. Stroud. He's a rookie and he won 10 games on a team that won just three last season. Enough said. He could be in the top tier soon.

2. Dak Prescott. He just had the best season of his career -- he led the NFL in touchdown passes with 36. But he has been inconsistent in the playoffs.

3. Jordan Love. It's just his first season as a starting quarterback, and in his past eight games he has thrown 20 touchdown passes and just 1 interception. He's the hottest quarterback in the league.

4. Jared Goff. He's not a great quarterback, but he's consistently good, as he typically throws for 4,500 yards and 30 touchdown passes every season. And he has been to a Super Bowl, although he lost.

5. Brock Purdy.

He could be in the elite tier if he wins the Super Bowl this season. He's young and ascending just like Love and Stroud. The difference is Purdy is on a great team, and he played three playoff games last season and won two of them, but lost the NFC Championship game after getting injured. Let's see how he does in the big games this season.
