Where does 49ers' Kyle Shanahan rank among NFL head coaches?

CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin has released his ranking of NFL head coaches heading into the 2025 season. As expected, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid sits comfortably at No. 1. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan still ranks among the league's best but dropped four spots from last year, landing at No. 7 after previously placing No. 3.

Shanahan enters his ninth season at the helm in San Francisco. He has led the 49ers to two Super Bowl appearances during his tenure but has yet to secure a championship victory. Last season's disappointing 6-11 finish, fueled by a wave of injuries, played a significant role in his slide down the list.

"Depending on the year, Shanahan's either a schematic genius on the precipice of glory or the dejected face of an injury-ravaged lineup," Benjamin wrote. "No other coach, after all, has guided four NFC title-game appearances in five years, while also overseeing four losing seasons."

San Francisco underwent a major offseason overhaul, aiming to inject youth into what had become an aging roster. The goal is to bounce back in 2025 and set the foundation for future success. Still, the 49ers' playoff hopes hinge heavily on staying healthy. While top-tier talent remains, depth has become a concern.

"It's pretty simple here: If his toys are sturdy, he can draw up a shootout with the best of them," Benjamin added. "Robert Saleh's return as a right-hand man on defense should also help, though Shanahan's also got a conservative bent in the biggest moments."

Between Reid and Shanahan in the rankings are Sean McVay (Rams), John Harbaugh (Ravens), Nick Sirianni (Eagles), Dan Campbell (Lions), and former 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh (Chargers).
