The defending champion Philadelphia Eagles continue to build, swinging a trade with Jacksonville for bruising third-year running back Tank Bigsby in exchange for 2026 fifth and sixth round draft picks.
Bigsby ran for 766 yards on 168 attempts (4.6 average) last year for the Jaguars, finding the end zone seven times.
The 23-year-old out of Auburn will join a running back room headlined by Saquon Barkley and deepened by AJ Dillon and Will Shipley. Beyond that, though, where will Bigsby fit into the Eagles' plans?
The Eagles are reportedly 'enamored' with Bigsby's ability as a kickoff returner, and sought additional depth besides Dillon and Shipley.
Dillon only made three rushing attempts for just 10 yards in his first game since the 2023 season, a long-awaited return after he missed the entirety of the 2024 season due to a neck injury.
Dillon's first carry - taken after Shipley went down with a rib injury - went for nine yards, so the veteran was fairly ineffectual on the remaining reps he had.
Bigsby likely gets a strong role in the kick returning game in addition to the primary backup running back duty, as NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reported. The trade doesn't come as a surprise, with Bigsby being rendered expendable after a strong Week 1 showing by Travis Etienne, who is backed up by rookie Bhayshul Tuten.
A tough back unafraid of contact, Bigsby also had value for Jacksonville in goal-line situations, and one could imagine he could get a goal-line rep or two with his new squad.
Bigsby is in the third year of a four-year, $5.4 million contract signed with the Jaguars in May 2023, meaning he is under contract until the end of next year.
It's the latest in a flurry of moves by Howie Roseman, who has swung trades for Vikings quarterback Sam Howell, Texans wide receiver John Metchie III and fellow Jaguars offensive tackle Fred Johnson. Roseman also would have swung a trade for Micah Parsons if the Cowboys weren't repulsed by the idea of Parsons going to a rival.
Roseman's latest deal is yet another effort to make this already stellar roster as airtight as possible.
