Despite having an 8-4 record and sitting on top of the NFC East, the Philadelphia Eagles don't look like a Super Bowl contender right now.
The defending champions are putting up 22.5 points per game, which ranks 19th in the NFL. A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts don't seem to be on the same page, and Saquon Barkley has looked like a shell of himself after running away with Offensive Player of the Year honors last season. Per former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky, it's all because of their woes on first down.
Talking on ESPN's "Get Up," the former quarterback pointed out that OC Kevin Patullo has failed to get anything going on early downs.
"Saquon (Barkley) last year, running the football on first down, he ran for over 1,100 yards. 70 yards per game. This year, he's averaging 38 yards running the ball on first down," Orlovsky said. "You're always in third-and-long, that's why you have all these 3-and-outs. They don't do one thing well, offensively."
The Eagles rank 24th in total yards per game (304.8), 23rd in passing yards per game (196.3) and 22nd in rushing yards per game (108.5). More importantly, they're the fifth-worst team in the entire league in third-down conversion percentage (34.5 percent).
That's simply not sustainable, regardless of how many stars they have. Patullo's play-calling has been predictable, and his offensive schemes are basic and outdated. The Eagles look like a ticking time bomb, and unless they go back to their old playbook from the Kellen Moore days, they might not go far in the playoffs this season.
