With rookies reporting to fall camp on Saturday, there has been some injury intel thrown around camp. On Sunday, the Lions announced that a handful of players will begin the fall camp season on the PUP injury list (physically unable to perform) or NFI injury list (Non-football injury). Some were expected, but some may be a surprise. Let’s take a look to see who will be sidelined to start the season:

PUP List

A few notable players begin the season on the PUP list.  Veteran defensive end Romeo Okwara is one of tose names. Okwara is recovering from an achilles injury he suffered during the 2021 season. Okwara is expected to join the team eventually this year, but it is not determined when. It’s worth noting that he suffered the injury in October of last season.

Another productive player from a year ago who starts the year on PUP is cornerback Jerry Jacobs. This one is also expected as Jacobs tore his ACL near the end of last season. Jacobs went undrafted a year ago and was signed by Detroit as a free agent. He really came into his own as he was forced into action due to other injuries in the secondary. Similar to Okwara, Jacobs is expected back sooner rather than later.

Finally, rookie Josh Paschal begins the season on the PUP list as well. The 3rd rounder from Kentucky has an injury history dating back to his Kentucky Wildcat days, however the specifics of his current injury are not completely clear.

NFI List

There are two players who have landed themselves on the NIL list. New signee linebacker Natrez Patrick will not participate in the start of fall camp. The circumstances of this is not clear at this time. The more notable name here is the 1st round wide receiver selection Jameson Williams. Why is Williams beginning on the NFI list versus the PUP? Because Williams sustained his injury prior to signing with an NFL team, it’s counted as a non-football injury in the eyes of the NFL. It’s undetermined when Williams will return, but it’s almost certain he will come back sometime during the regular season. A healthy Jameson Williams will provide an instant impact to Detroit’s offense, so it makes sense for them to take things slow.

Conclusion

Overall, there aren’t a ton of surprises here, although Paschall is the one name I would keep an eye on. The Lions are really in need of an impact player on the defensive line, so Paschall would undoubtedly get an opportunity. It will be a shame if he can’t go for part of the season. It’s also worth noting that the veterans report to camp on Tuesday, so there could be other names that end up on an injury list as the week goes on.

The way the NFL and PUP works is a player has until the end of the preseason to come off and become eligible for a roster spot (or practice squad spot). If the preseason is over and a player remains on either list, the team will get to decide if they want him to start the season on the regular season PUP/NFI list. This means the player would have to miss the first four weeks of the season before he’s eligible to return to action.
