While Brian Flores is confident at cornerback, talent is still available at the position if the Minnesota Vikings want to address the perceived need

The Minnesota Vikings were consistently linked to a potential trade for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Ultimately, the Miami Dolphins chose to trade him to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

There are many who believe that the Vikings need to invest into depth at the cornerback position, as there are a lot of questions to their depth after top cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. Despite the questions, the Vikings believe they have answers in Isaiah Rodgers, Mekhi Blackmon, and Jeff Okudah, and defensive coordinator Brian Flores believes it.

"He's been on my radar since he was at UMass, a fast playmaker," said Flores when talking about (Isaiah) Rodgers. "I think he's one of these kind of late-round guys who found his way in the league in the kicking game. And got in some games and made some plays. I've always thought he was a good player and was ascending. And the opportunity presented itself that we could maybe acquire him. I was all in, and I'm happy we got him. He's been a great addition. He's got a great kind of football IQ and acumen. That's something that we stressed, really, throughout the group, at all levels, secondary, second level, and obviously D line. And I think it's just a great addition we talk about, you know, bringing guys in who as far as building a synergy within the group. How does this guy mesh with Murph (Byron Murphy Jr.) and Harry (Harrison Smith) and Telly (Josh Metellus), and he's just come in and done a great job from that standpoint."

If the Vikings make it a couple of weeks into training camp and think that they need to make a change, there is still some talent out there.

Rasul Douglas

An eight year veteran, Douglas spent the last season and a half with the Buffalo Bills and played in nearly 3,000 snaps over the last three seasons. In 2024, Douglas took a step backward in coverage, allwoing a whopping 72.6% completeions for 569 yards and three touchdowns.

The downside is that Douglas is about to turn age 30 and he isn't very fast in general. Douglas might be worth a flier, but his athletic profile might steer the Vikings away.

Stephon Gilmore

This is the obvious one that fans will look at. Gilmore was a solid player for the Vikings last season after being a mid-August signing for $7 million. He was good in long stretches for the Vikings, especially since his eyes and instincts are there, but there is one problem: Gilmore doesn't have the juice anymore.

There were real stretches that he just didn't have it. Whether it be crashing downhill or carrying vertically, Gilmore isn't close to the same player that he was in his prime when he won Defensive Player of the Year with the New England Patriots in 2019. He would stabilize the position, but the issues that plagued the Vikings in 2024 will still persist.

Mike Hilton

The Vikings haven't really shown an interest in adding a higher profile slot cornerback, because they like to kick Byron Murphy Jr. inside when they play standard nickel, dime, and big dime packages. He has the ability to thrive on the inside, and it's something the Vikings want to take advantage of. If they were to change course, Hilton is an interesting player.

Despite entering his year 31 season, Hilton had a very solid year for the Bengals, especially with his run defense. Pro Football Focus graded Hilton a whopping 91.7 in run defense across 260 snaps, which isn't a small sample size. However, he did allow a career-high 78.3% catch rate, but it was the third-lowest yards per reception of his career at 9.0. He isn't going to be anything more than a stop-gap option for the Vikings, but any player you sign right now will be.

Asante Samuel Jr.

This is the one guy that the entire fanbase seems to want the Vikings to sign. He was a second round pick of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021 and had an up-and-down career, including last year where he played in just four games due to injury, and that's the biggest issue.

He is still unsigned mainly due to a neck injury that he is dealing with. Not a great sign for a free agent, but he is getting it checked later in July. If he doe get cleared, I'm not sure he's a great fit for the Vikings, especially since he struggles to tackle. That is a big factor in Brian Flores' defense. Despite the fanbase wanting him, I would stay away.
