Who Can Replace Buccaneers Calijah Kancey?
Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn Images

The Buccaneers beat the Texans, but they took their pound of flesh. Luke Goedeke will be out for multiple weeks. Not ideal, but it can be managed, especially if Wirfs comes back earlier. But the real problem is Calijah Kancey. It’s worst case scenario for him. He tore his pectoral and will be out for the rest of the season. He was looking really good too, which just makes it worse. It will be incredibly difficult to replace him, but the Bucs will have to.

The most obvious answer is to look within. But not in the spiritual sense. Elijah Roberts is the most likely guy the Bucs will turn to. He has taken limited action and has looked pretty solid, but it’s hard to know how he will look given more time. Greg Gaines and Logan Hall will also likely have to bear some of the weight. Gaines didn’t look like a complete waste of space yesterday against the Texans, so maybe he can do it.

Looking outside ourselves, the name getting the most thrown around is Christian Wilkins. It makes sense as he is easily the biggest name on the open market. The biggest question is if he’s in playing shape and how concerning the character concerns are. He was at one point a very good DT, but the Raiders released him on account of him not recovering from a foot injury and he’s on the wrong side of thirty. Speaking of old guys though, what if the team calls Will Gholston back? Apparently he’s not retired, so maybe the Bucs spin the tires on him.

I would be very shocked if the Bucs traded assets for a short-term fix, but anything is possible. Maybe a bad team would accept a sixth or seventh for a back-up guy on their roster. I just don’t see it happening.

There are no good solutions for the Kancey sized hole facing the team. Unless Elijah Roberts becomes elite immediately, they will miss his presence. Not only that, but there’s a question of what you do with Kancey regarding his fifth year or another deal. That’s a future problem as right now the Bucs have to survive their games this season.
