It is the question we are all asking ourselves after the news of the Jalen Ramsey trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers. As many of you are aware by now, Jonnu Smith was part of the Jalen Ramsey trade for Minkah Fitzpatrick, which has created mixed reactions among the Miami Dolphins fan base. The reason it has created a mixed reaction is because people, I think, saw his franchise record season, and they did not want to part ways with him, but the National Football League is a business.
With that in mind, I have three players in mind who could be good fits for this team to fill the void left by Jonnu Smith. Now, after all the craziness that unfolded today, let us take a Deep dive into the Dolphins’ potential candidates for replacing Jonnu Smith.
The Miami Dolphins, after trading Jonnu Smith, could use another pass-catching tight end who can be a reliable safety valve for Tua Tagovailoa. That would be current Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts. Why do I think he can suit the Dolphins, you ask? Because he is, for one, younger than Jonnu Smith, and he has the athleticism to be a true cheat code for the Dolphins’ offense. They could also use him in a lot of ways in the Dolphins’ cheat motion offense that Mike McDaniel runs.
Pitts is going to be twenty-five years old in October, and if the Dolphins can acquire him at a good price, which is the key, then they should be set at tight end for the foreseeable future, at least for the starting tight end position. Something the Dolphins have always been, and in fac,t all teams in the National Football League are trying to do, which is setting up for sustained success in this league. Stephen Ross has always preached this from the moment he took the podium with Chris Grier in December 2018 for a press conference after the firing of Adam Gase.
Pitts would add versatility and athleticism to the Dolphins’ locker room, which is needed for this team to compete at the highest level of the National Football League.
Another suitable option for the Dolphins, if Pitts does not work out, is Colby Parkinson from the Los Angeles Rams. Now, Parkinson is somewhat similar to Pitts, but he also has the ability to block. The blocking aspect of his game is something they could use in the run game especially in the goal to goal situations where they need some extra blockers to help most likely De’von Achane though Ollie Gordon could also be used in the goal to goal situations as well because of his size and speed as a bruiser type running back the polar opposite of Achane who is more of an elusive pass catching running back. Parkinson is also considered a potential red zone threat due to his size at six feet seven, and has good speed and agility with the ability to make tough plays on the ball when needed. That is why I believe Colby Parkinson is a good fit for the Dolphins, although he may be their second option behind Kyle Pitts.
The last notable option for the Dolphins, while he is not the most prominent name, is someone that the Miami Dolphins have been keeping a close eye on “for a while,” says Omar Kelly from the Miami Herald. Mayer has not had the notable stats like Parkinson and Pitts with forty-eight catches for four hundred sixty yards and two touchdowns, so he may not have the stats, but he does have size at six feet four, two hundred sixty-five pounds. I would rather the other two I mentioned because of their abilities to make plays on the ball and not a reach player like Mayer, especially after they dealt Jonnu Smith to the Steelers today. This one was brief, as I didn’t have much to discuss regarding Michael Mayer’s abilities on the field, other than his connection to the Dolphins.
Dolphins Tight End Replacement In Summary
There is no doubt that the Dolphins could use another pass-catching tight end, though these three stand out because they were linked to the Dolphins after the Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey trade. I mentioned how Kyle Pitts’s speed and athleticism can suit the Dolphins’ cheat motion offense and the scheme that Mike McDaniel runs. I then mentioned how Colby Parkinson’s size and agility can be used in the passing and running game.
Lastly, I will mention how Michael Mayer was linked to the Dolphins through a tweet from Omar Kelly on social media. There are more names that the Dolphins could go after, but priority one is to address the tight end position, and that is something that they should address immediately, something that I am positive Chris Grier will waste no time in doing.
