Despite a heartbreaking loss in the 2025 AFC Championship, the Denver Broncos had a very successful season.
However, in the NFL, success often leads to coaching shakeups, with coaches seeking promotions and less successful teams striving to become competitive franchises.
So, while the future looks promising for the Broncos, the present remains uncertain. Denver has many coaches who might not return next year, including those who were key to the team’s successful season.
The most talked-about name thus far has been the Broncos’ defensive coordinator, Vance Joseph. Joseph has been calling the plays for Denver’s defense for the last three years, turning the Broncos into a top defense over the past two.
But while Denver was still in the playoffs, he missed multiple head coaching opportunities.
That said, the Arizona Cardinals have shown a strong interest in him, with Joseph being the leading favorite for the Arizona job. They haven’t hired anyone yet, and he’s now completely available.

If the Cardinals take a different direction, Joseph will probably stay in Denver. However, since Arizona hasn’t made a decision yet and is still exploring coaching options, it suggests otherwise.
If Joseph departs, Denver will lose a key leader on a strong defense. Therefore, the Broncos must carefully select their new defensive coordinator to fill Joseph’s important role.
Sean Payton hired Davis Webb, along with Joseph, and the remaining names on this list. Like Joseph, Payton hired Webb in his first year. As the quarterbacks coach, Davis Webb has been working with Bo Nix and has been crucial to Nix’s fantastic start to his career.
Last offseason, Webb became the passing game coordinator and also served as the QB coach. In this new role, Webb elevated the passing game to new heights, helping the Broncos finish 14-3.
Like Joseph, Webb has attracted head coaching interest, especially from the Las Vegas Raiders. Webb completed two interview rounds in Las Vegas, indicating the Raiders are very keen on Webb taking over.
There is a real chance that Webb might not get the job, as the Raiders could target the still-available Seahawks offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak. Webb is undoubtedly talented, but Kubiak’s success with the Seahawks might give him the edge right now.

Many teams need, or will soon need, an offensive coordinator. Webb’s days of being a quarterback coach or passing game coordinator are likely over. Expect him to secure an offensive coordinator job, especially if Joseph gets a head coaching position. Joseph would need a trusted coordinator, possibly someone from Denver.
Like Joseph, Webb would be a significant loss for Denver. Webb was the perfect coach for Bo Nix, and only time will tell if the Broncos can find someone to fill that gap.
Jim Leonhard joined Denver in Payton’s second season as a defensive backs coach, also serving as the passing game coordinator. Last offseason, he was promoted to assistant head coach while continuing his role as passing game coordinator. Over the past two seasons, he has played a key role in their defensive strength.

The Broncos have allowed 18.3 points per game over the past two seasons, and their pass defense has been exceptional.
Therefore, it is not surprising that he has been strongly considered for various defensive coordinator positions. The Buffalo Bills and New York Jets have already shown interest. Most likely, the Cardinals and Raiders will also consider him if Joseph and/or Webb obtain their respective coaching positions.
However, if Joseph leaves, Denver might promote him to defensive coordinator, which would be ideal for Payton to keep a familiar name.
The only coach not leaving for a better opportunity, offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, is already on his way out. Lombardi was fired shortly after the Broncos’ loss to the Patriots.
Payton hired Lombardi when he first arrived in Denver, but he never entrusted him with play-calling duties. However, after the offense’s poor performance against the Patriots on Sunday, Payton decided to let him go.

Many believe that this move was made to open the door for Davis Webb to become their offensive coordinator. If he doesn’t secure a head coaching position, he will still be searching for offensive coordinator roles.
However, the one caveat is that Sean Payton will likely want to continue calling plays. At the same time, Webb would probably leave for a chance to be the primary play caller. Either way, knowing Sean Payton, the hire will probably be someone he is working with or has worked with before, making Webb a strong option.
Denver fans probably won’t have to wait long to find out where their coaches will go. Lombardi was fired just two days after the season ended. Similarly, if any team wants Joseph or Webb as their coach, they won’t have to wait long to make the move. Also, Joseph’s decision will likely influence Leonhard’s. One of them will probably leave, while the other will be calling Denver’s defense next season.
Regarding the offensive side, all the Broncos can do is wait for Webb. If he doesn’t land a head coaching position, the Broncos will probably work hard to make him their offensive coordinator. Don’t be surprised if Payton hires Pete Carmichael Jr., his longtime Saints OC and current offensive assistant.
Now that the Broncos have had time to mourn their postseason loss, it’s time for them to refocus. To improve their chances next year, they need to either sign some high-caliber assistants or make major new hires. Payton still has a clear vision for the team, so any move he makes soon will likely be significant.
