Who's The 'Stud'? Cowboys' Run Game Pecking Order Still A Work In Progress

The Dallas Cowboys' run game looms as one of the most fascinating position groups to watch as training camp continues in Oxnard, and for better or worse, head coach Brian Schottenheimer is no closer to figuring out the depth chart.

Javonte Williams, who took the bulk of the first-team reps on Day 1, Miles Sanders who flashed on Day 2, Deuce Vaughn, Jaydon Blue, whose burst is noticeable, and Phil Mafah make up the room.

With the thought that a running back by committee will be the approach that Schottenheimer takes, he's not sure how the room will shake out.

“It's early, if we have a guy that clearly wins the starting job, then he'll be the starting guy,” Schottenheimer said. “Is he the bellcow, the stud or whatever, let's let these guys compete. And it does take more than one. It usually takes more than two. Hunter Luepke, is he one of the two?

"Well, he plays a bunch of football for us. Really like the young guys that we drafted. I talked about Jaydon [Blue] the other day, Phil Mafah. So, we're not ready. We're a long ways away from knowing what this is going to look like. In a 22-game season, whatever it ends up looking like, you're going to need all those bodies.”

So, it appears that all backs mentioned are going to be counted on in some form or another throughout the year, but we still aren't sure how the reps will be split on game day.

Granted, we are only a couple of days into camp, so naturally, there are still a lot of things to figure out, and the depth chart is clearly one of them. But perhaps even more interestingly, every player feels like they are in with a shot at contributing to the offense.

How the room will eventually shake out is anyone's guess, including Schottenheimer's, but one thing is for certain: we are still a long way away from finding how who Dak Prescott will be handing the ball off to in Week 1.
