Why Bears QB Justin Fields' explanation over recent controversy makes sense and is believable
Mike Dinovo-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier this week, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields explained why he recently unfollowed the Bears on Instagram.

And his response wasn't satisfactory for some folks.

"I'm glad we're talking about it, because why do people take social media so serious," said Fields on the St. Brown Brothers podcast. "I still mess with the Bears, I'm just trying to take a little break. I unfollowed the Bears and the NFL. I'm not just trying to have football on my timeline. It's something that I don't want to spend my time on. I'm about to go on vacation and I don't want to see no football."

Fields' answer was met with some eye rolls. Barstool Sports, for example, published an article titled "Justin Fields' Answer About Why He Unfollowed The Bears Was The Worst Answer I've Ever Seen".

I didn't see the issue with his answer. In fact, I thought it was the best possible answer he could've given. Not only does it make sense, but I fully believe Fields.

This is going to be the toughest offseason of Fields' football career. He's spent his entire life being the dude that everyone wants on their team. Even when he transferred from Georgia to Ohio State, he was a coveted player that essentially had his pick of transfer destinations.

But now he has to publicly go through a pro franchise deciding whether or not they want him on the roster. And he has to helplessly watch while talking heads debate if he's good enough to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. Most of those debates, by the way, center on Fields' negatives.

That's a tough place to be in as a human. And remember, there is a human element to all of this that it seems like we often forget about. I can totally understand Fields wanting to clear his mind of anything football related. The last thing he probably wants to do is open Instagram and see a Bears post which could instantly take him to a place of anxiety over the franchise's looming decision.

Fields just wants some space from all the drama of the offseason. And since he's the one that's living it, he deserves the chance to have that space.
