Why Carl Banks disagrees with fellow Giants icon about possible Odell Beckham Jr. reunion

Whispers about a possible reunion involving the New York Giants and veteran free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. grew louder after it was recently reported that Beckham met with Giants head coach John Harbaugh at the NFL's annual meetings this week.

Former player and current NFL analyst Tiki Barber previously made it known he wanted no part of "the unintended circus that will come" with the Giants bringing Beckham back. On the latest edition of the "Bleav in Giants" podcast, fellow Giants icon Carl Banks explained why he disagrees with Barber.

Why Odell Beckham Jr. wouldn't be a distraction for the 2026 Giants

"I don't have a problem with his presence in the locker room," Banks said about Beckham. "He's no longer the guy who magically sucks the oxygen out of the room. He's an established NFL player. ...He's going to be a good teammate."

Banks noted that Beckham has matured from what the receiver was when he caused some noticeable distractions with the Giants from the 2014 NFL Draft up until he was traded to the Cleveland Browns following the 2018 season. That said, it's unknown if Beckham has anything useful left in the tank. He'll turn 34 years old this coming November, and he hasn't played in a regular-season game since Dec. 8, 2024.

Beckham had Harbaugh as a head coach when they were with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2023 campaign. While Jordan Raanan of ESPN reported this past Tuesday that "no deal is imminent," Raanan added that "there is some degree of interest from the Giants."

Why Odell Beckham Jr. could be a positive for the current Giants squad

Raanan also shared that Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart and wide receiver Malik Nabers "have informed the team that they would support adding Beckham." Banks sounds confident that Beckham could be a positive for younger players in the locker room.

"He's never been outworked," Banks said about Beckham. "He's always been in shape. I only see him as an asset. I think he's a stabilizing force, if you ask me, for someone like Malik Nabers, who is still super raw, super talented, just as emotional as a young Odell Beckham because he wants it so bad. The seasoned Odell Beckham can now calibrate a guy like Nabers."

It remains to be seen if Harbaugh, the undisputed leader of the Giants, views Beckham as enough of an asset to take a flier on the three-time Pro Bowl selection this offseason.
