Why Colts aren't ready to name winner of Anthony Richardson Sr., Daniel Jones QB competition

A recent update shared that there did not "appear to be obvious separation between" Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones in the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback competition.

Per The Athletic's James Boyd, nothing that occurred during Indianapolis' joint practice with the Green Bay Packers on Thursday changed the state of the Colts' QB battle heading into Saturday's preseason matchup.

"Indianapolis, which struggled mightily on offense throughout the day, managed just one touchdown on 24 plays from about the 15-yard line and in," Boyd wrote about the Colts' session with the Packers. "Jones never guided the offense into the end zone, while Anthony Richardson threw a short TD pass to wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. on his 12th and final red zone play during that period. ...Save for that final two-minute drill led by Richardson, the Colts offense was overwhelmed by the Packers defense for the majority of the two-hour practice. Richardson finished 9-of-20 passing with one touchdown and one interception. Jones was 13-of-16 with two interceptions and zero touchdowns."

Jones had an opportunity to shine after Richardson suffered a dislocated right pinkie after taking a massive hit in Indianapolis' preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 7. That didn't happen, as Jones completed 10-of-21 passes for 144 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium.

According to JJ Stankevitz of Colts.com, head coach Shane Steichen hinted on Thursday that he may not name a Week 1 QB1 until after Indianapolis concludes the preseason at the Cincinnati Bengals on Aug. 23.

"We got a preseason game (Saturday), we have some practices next week and we'll work through that," Steichen said about his unsettled quarterback situation. "I don't have an exact timetable on it, but sooner rather than later would be nice. ...I want to see how this thing plays out on Saturday, and we'll see early into next week and see where it goes."

As of Friday morning, FanDuel Sportsbook had Richardson as a -245 betting favorite to start over Jones (+186) when Indianapolis opens the regular season against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 7. It will be interesting to see how those odds change by Sunday.
