Why Cowboys should prioritize trading CB Trevon Diggs

The Dallas Cowboys remain one of the NFL’s most dynamic offensive teams; however, defensive inconsistencies hinder their potential. As the 2025 season approaches its end, Dallas finds itself near the bottom of the league in points and yards allowed, highlighting a secondary that falters in crucial moments. If the Cowboys aim to bridge the gap between offense and defense, trading Trevon Diggs this offseason should be seriously considered.

Diggs doesn’t fit Dallas’ defensive scheme

Diggs’ strengths no longer align with Dallas’ defensive framework. He excels as a press corner and man-to-man defender, leveraging his instincts and aggression to create turnovers. Yet the Cowboys primarily use a zone-heavy scheme that prioritizes communication and discipline—areas where Diggs’ high-risk approach has created vulnerabilities.

Declining impact on the field

Before his injury in the 2025 season, Diggs participated in six games, recording 18 tackles without any interceptions. While statistics can be misleading, they indicate a diminishing impact within a system that fails to optimize its skill set. The disconnect between player and scheme is increasingly evident.

The salary-cap reality

Financial factors further support the case for a trade. Diggs is set to have a substantial cap hit in the coming seasons, and with the Cowboys already juggling significant financial commitments, this is a critical issue. Investing heavily in a player misaligned with the defensive identity restricts Dallas’ ability to address broader needs.

A necessary step toward chemistry over star power

Dallas faces significant challenges due to communication breakdowns in its secondary. Trading Diggs while his market value is high would allow the Cowboys to reconstruct the secondary with players who fit the defensive scheme and align with the team's future aspirations.

Dallas has cornerbacks more aligned with its long-term vision. DaRon Bland has emerged as a key player in the zone scheme, while Shavon Revel Jr. offers physicality and adaptability, and Caelen Carson adds youth and depth. Together, they can foster a cohesive secondary.

Young cornerbacks fit the Cowboys' vision

Dallas faces significant challenges due to communication breakdowns in its secondary. Trading Diggs while his market value is high would allow the Cowboys to reconstruct the secondary with players who fit the defensive scheme and align with the team's future aspirations.

Though this move may be unpopular with fans, championship teams often make hard decisions. The Cowboys don't need more highlight-reel defensive playmakers; they require a defense that functions cohesively. By prioritizing youth, scheme compatibility, and overall chemistry over individual stardom, the Cowboys can create a secondary that supports their elite offense and fosters sustained success into the next season.
