Why ESPN analyst is 'skeptical' of Steelers' offseason moves

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been busy during the offseason with the acquisition of several veteran players.

41-year-old QB Aaron Rodgers signed a one-year deal with the franchise, while veterans Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith were traded from the Miami Dolphins to the Steelers on Monday.

The Steelers have had success bolstering their roster with talented veterans ahead of the 2025 campaign. While the experience is a key factor, ESPN NFL analyst Damien Woody appeared on "Get Up" Tuesday morning and did not seem so confident.

"If you look at the totality of all the moves that the Pittsburgh Steelers have made, quite honestly they've gotten older at a lot of the critical positions that's required to win big time football games," Woody said. "You got a 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, Darius Slay is like the second-oldest cornerback in the National Football League. He's in his mid-30s.

"Cam Hayward is 36. T.J. Watt, he's 30. Jalen Ramsey's 30. All these guys, big-name guys, but they're up there in age. In a 17-game slate, if you wanted to make a run, the No. 1 thing that you got to deal with is health. Can these guys stay healthy enough to make a run for the Pittsburgh Steelers? I'm highly skeptical of that playing itself out."

In addition to landing the Super Bowl-champion Rodgers, Pittsburgh picked up CB Darius Slay Jr. on a one-year deal in free agency and acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks.

The 30-year-old Ramsey, who is a past Super Bowl champion with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, joins a stout defense that allowed the eighth-fewest points per game (20.4) last season.

Smith should give Rodgers a viable option on offense after a career-season with the Dolphins and some familiarity with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who he played for on the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.

It is clear with the roster that Pittsburgh has put together that it has the talent and experience to be successful. It is also fair to wonder, though, how some of the older players like Rodgers and Slay will hold up during the 17-game grind.

After all, Rodgers has dealt with a rash of injuries in recent years, notably a torn left Achilles tendon during the Week 1 game against the Buffalo Bills in 2023. Time will tell if injuries will become a factor, but you cannot argue the talent that is on the roster.

Despite being in a loaded AFC North division, the Steelers have the pieces in place to win their first playoff game since the 2016 season. How their new acquisitions mesh with one another and hold up physically over the duration of the season will determine how far they can go.
