Why Joe Flacco could turn things around with Bengals in Week 6

After losing franchise quarterback Joe Burrow in Week 2 due to a toe injury, the Cincinnati Bengals (2-3) have gotten poor quarterback play from backup Jake Browning in his absence.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor decided he was open to a change at quarterback after Browning's disastrous game in a 37-24 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, where he threw three interceptions, totaling eight in four games.

Bengals make change at quarterback

After trading for the Cleveland Browns' backup quarterback Joe Flacco on Tuesday, the 40-year-old will get the ball in Cincinnati's Week 6 matchup vs. the Green Bay Packers. Despite throwing six interceptions in 160 attempts across four games, Taylor announced that “[Flacco's] gonna take all the reps.”

“Yeah, played him a lot. Watch him a lot. Brings great experience, great leadership. His style fits our style play too,” Taylor said, via the Cincinnati Enquirer's Kelsey Conway. “So excited to get him out there. We'll start him this week, so he's gonna take all the reps. Get ready to go. Already spent a lot of time meeting with us given speed, so feel really good about where he's at."

When asked during his media availability what made him decide to start Flacco on Sunday, Taylor said he's “very comfortable with his style concepts, he's been good at, things that fit us.”

“You just know, I mean, I don't know personally, I only met him once before he came here, but knows game as well. I mean I've played against him I don't know how many times, a lot of times it's so very comfortable with his style concepts, he's been good at, things that fit us, that we do a lot of the terminology. There's a bunch of carryover, more so than I would have anticipated so quickly.”

Joe Flacco could turn things around with Bengals

In the latter stages of his career, Flacco is no longer the quarterback he once was with the Baltimore Ravens. There, the former first-round pick led them to six postseason appearances, winning Super Bowl XLVII and earning Super Bowl MVP honors against the San Francisco 49ers. Flacco has stepped up when called upon the last few seasons, including for the injured Deshaun Watson en route to the playoffs in 2023, earning him the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Flacco has passed for 815 yards and has two touchdowns this season. Now paired with two of the best wide receivers in the NFL, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, Flacco could have a resurgence with the Bengals. Chase is tied for 10th in the league in yards (374) and 12th in touchdowns (three), while Higgins (158 yards and two touchdowns) is among the best WR2 options in the league.

The AFC North is not competitive this season, with the Pittsburgh Steelers the only team above .500 (3-1). Therefore, just getting adequate quarterback play from Flacco could make a considerable difference.

The Packers have the 11th-best pass defense this season. If the Bengals' offensive line can hold off the pass-rush and Flacco connects with Chase or Higgins, the Bengals have a chance to return to the win column after losing three straight.
