Why Lions' Dan Campbell knew Jahmyr Gibbs' breakout performance vs. Buccaneers 'was coming'

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs enjoyed a breakout performance of the season when he totaled a career-best 218 scrimmage yards and two rushing touchdowns in the club's 24-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that improved Detroit to 5-2 on Monday night.

Following the game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell explained why he wasn't surprised Gibbs emerged as the most valuable offensive player of Monday's prime-time victory.

Dan Campbell believes there's "no looking back" for Jahmyr Gibbs after stellar performance vs. Buccaneers

"You felt like this was coming," Campbell said about Gibbs' outing, per Nick Shook of the NFL's website. "You felt like this has been building, and as he gets in better shape and starts getting his feet under him and starts getting a feel of it – starts breaking some tackles. Every week, you feel like it's gotten closer and closer. [Monday night] was the night where he just busted one of these out of there, and there'll be no looking back."

Gibbs tallied season highs of 136 rushing yards and 82 receiving yards during what became somewhat of a defensive struggle on Monday night. According to Eric Woodyard of ESPN, the 23-year-old became the second player with 200 scrimmage yards and two scrimmage touchdowns during a "Monday Night Football" contest over the past 15 seasons. Tyreek Hill last accomplished the feat when he did so during the 2018 campaign as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Gibbs' top highlight-reel moment of the evening involved him finding a running lane and blowing past the Tampa Bay defense for a 78-yard rushing touchdown in the game's second quarter:

"Those long ones are fun to watch," Lions quarterback Jared Goff said about Gibbs' lengthy touchdown journey. "I feel like I got the best seat in the house just to, like, see him hit the hole and then just, like, take off. I don't know how many safeties in the league could catch him. So, as soon as he gets there, it's over and he's gone. ...Yeah, it's pretty cool. He's dang fast and it's fun to watch."

Specifically, NFL Next Gen Stats shared that Gibbs reached a top speed of 22.23 mph, the third fastest by a ball-carrier this season, on that touchdown carry. Gibbs and Co. will now get a bit of a break during the Lions' Week 8 bye. Detroit next faces the division-rival Minnesota Vikings (3-3) on Nov. 2. 3-3 Minnesota plays at the Los Angeles Chargers (4-3) this coming Thursday night.

Dan Campbell predicts what's next for Jahmyr Gibbs

Campbell made it known that he expects Gibbs will grow only stronger as the season rolls along. That could be bad news for a Minnesota defense that will have to take on a rested Gibbs on the first Sunday of November.

"I think he's just going to continue to do this," Campbell added about Gibbs. "...If you can get him [to] the second level, he'll do the rest. We're fortunate because our O-line can open some holes in and we have the receivers that block. So, the rest is up to him. One-on-one with a safety."
