Cleveland Browns star pass-rusher Myles Garrett made history when he set a new single-season record of 23 sacks during his club's 20-18 win at the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
New York Giants legend Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers previously shared the old record of 22.5 sacks. While speaking inside the Fox NFL studios on Sunday, Strahan explained how he technically holds a record that Garrett did not break.
"I mean, I hold the record for a 16-game season. They hold the record for a 17-game season," Strahan said about Garrett and Watt, per Doric Sam of Bleacher Report. "That's the way it works out. You can't compare records from 12-game seasons to 16 or 17-game seasons."
Garrett had the ability to play in an extra game amid his pursuit of history that wasn't available to Strahan during the 2001 season. It's also worth noting that Garrett only tied the unofficial record (23) for sacks that was set during the 1978 campaign.
That said, Strahan made it known on Sunday that he feels Garrett had an "absolutely amazing" season.
"You don't know how hard it is to do that on a team that isn't always in the lead, a team that isn't always competitive," Strahan said about Garrett featuring for a Browns side that went 5-12. "I think that is the most amazing thing about it. He's done it on a team where he's the focus. He's the guy that gets doubled and tripled every time, and it's never stopped him from putting up numbers year after year."
As Daniel Oyefusi noted for ESPN, Garrett revealed after Sunday's win that he isn't satisfied with getting to 23 single-season sacks.
"Find your dreams come true," Garrett said. "Been waiting on this my whole life, my whole football career. I knew I had it in me. I wanted that 25 [sacks]. They made it real difficult these last two games, especially, but really these last three. That'll be the next journey, trying to go out there and get 25."
If Garrett can get to 25 sacks in fewer than 17 games as soon as next season, nobody will be able to question the validity of his record.
