Why Mike Evans Didn’t Betray the Buccaneers

It’s easy to look at Mike Evans’ departure to the San Francisco 49ers as betrayal after 12 successful seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Evans even once said he wanted to finish his career with the Buccaneers, and that’s not happening. That said, general manager Jason Licht doesnt’ want the fan base to jump on the traitor bandwagon. “Mike gave us everything he had for his 12 seasons here and established himself as one of the best players in the league,” Licht told reporters on Wednesdday via ESPN’s Jenna Laine. “So to say it again, one of our best players we’ve ever had — I don’t feel betrayed. He earned the right. I said that over and over. He earned the right to make this decision. And sometimes you’ve got to talk it over with your family and just sometimes you’re just ready for another chapter.” Evans’ new chapter begins with a 49ers team that has reached two Super Bowls since 2019 but has fallen short both times. The Niners’ need for a quality No. 1 wide receiver became evident with the departure of Deebo Samuel in 2025 and another injury-riddled season for Brandon Aiyuk. Evans is instantly quarterback Brock Purdy’s top target now. Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield meanwhile will need Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka to step up big in 2026. “I’m just happy for Mike and I’m happy he found a place he wanted to be, and that’s being truthful,” Licht said. “They’re doing their best to put a roster together too.”
