Why Packers’ Matt LaFleur is ‘Excited’ About Lukas Van Ness
Wm. Glasheen USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Green Bay Packers are throwing the kitchen sink at third-year edge rusher Lukas Van Ness.

Van Ness, chosen No. 13 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, has yet to live up to his billing as a first-round selection, but in defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s second season, Green Bay is experimenting with moving the former Iowa standout around.

Green Bay Packers Creating Opportunities for Lukas Van Ness

This spring, the Packers have even lined Van Ness up inside, at times.

“I think situationally, you can do that,” LaFleur told reporters following a June 3 OTA practice. “I think in known passing situations, there’s some thought around that. A lot of that is going to be dependent on everyone else, as well.”

After posting just three sacks in 2024, LaFleur is confident that Van Ness has what it takes to make some big strides this fall.

“Lukas has shown a lot of growth,” LaFleur said. “I’m excited to see him once we get pads on, and really all those guys, how they compete.”

Through his first three seasons, Van Ness has produced seven sacks with 65 total tackles, and 11. tackles for loss, but LaFleur says he’s already seen a transformation in the 6-foot-5 and 272-pound pass rusher.

“I just think there’s a different confidence level with him,” LaFleur said of Van Ness. “And the whole group as a whole, just our ability to get off the football, we spend a lot of time on that. Those guys have taken the coaching, embraced it, and have really worked at it.”
