Why Sam Howell 'Loves Nick Gates to Death'
USA TODAY Sports

Few relationships on the football field are as important as the one between the quarterback and center.

From the exchange on every play to having to be on the same page with making the correct checks and reads, the quarterback and center's relationship is pivotal to the offense's success.

Through four games, Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell and center Nick Gates have established a great relationship. Howell was very complimentary of Gates and his impact on him and the team.

“Nick's awesome. I love Nick to death. He works so hard [and] he prepares. We're definitely excited to have him here, and he fights. He competes so hard, and he's so tough. That's what you want, as far as having someone blocking him for you. You want someone that's going to fight until the end, and he's just a tough guy, and I love having him up there.”

Gates is in his first season with the Commanders after they signed him to a 3-year $16.5 million deal this offseason. The fifth-year offensive lineman spent his first four seasons with the New York Giants

In 2021, Gates suffered a gruesome leg injury on Sept. 17 against Washington. He returned on Oct. 30, 2022, and started eight of the Giants' final nine games, playing well enough to earn his three-year deal with Washington.

Gates' play through four games has left something to be desired. Pro Football Focus has credited him with allowing four sacks, and he's drawn two penalties. As a whole, the Commanders' offensive line has left something to be desired, as they've allowed the most in the league with 24.

Gates and Washington's offensive line will look to do a better job of keeping Howell upright when they host the Chicago Bears at 8:15 p.m. at FedEx Field on Thursday Night Football.
