Las Vegas Raiders QB Geno Smith can breathe a bit better, and for good reason.
The Raiders extended LT Kolton Miller to 2028, ensuring Smith will have protection on one side for the foreseeable future. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler broke the news Wednesday night, saying the deal is worth $66 million with $42.5 million guaranteed.
The 6-foot-8 Miller broke into the NFL when the Raiders selected him with the 15th overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and has since played 109 games. Miller, 29, has been relatively healthy except the 2023 season when he suffered a shoulder injury. That season he only played 13 games before having surgery in the offseason.
After surgery, Miller struggled. According to ESPN's Ryan McFadden, Miller gave up 11 sacks and 65 most pressures in a season where the offense was abysmal, at best. The run game finished last at 79.8 yards per game, according to ESPN stats.
The good news for the Raiders is Miller is 100 percent. He's shown that at organized team activities and training camp, joking around with head coach Pete Carroll. When Miller is playing at a high level it is good news for the Raiders offensive line.
Last month, Miller said he wants to remain a Raider for the rest of his life, according to The Athletic's Tashan Reed. For the Raiders' sake, it is a step in the right direction heading into the 2025 NFL season.
When Miller is playing well, it trickles to the rest of the offensive line. If he remains healthy, there is a chance Smith can play better than he did in Seattle with Miller on his blind side.
