Why Steelers have zero distractions heading into training camp

Training camps across the NFL are officially underway with each team having its own distractions on or off the field. But here are three reasons the Steelers shouldn't have any heading into camp.

Fully signed rookie class

Pittsburgh got off to a quick start with signing its 2023 NFL Draft class, but then negotiations came to a halt, specifically for second-round CB Joey Porter Jr. It was a unique scenario as the No. 32 pick would typically be a first rounder. However, that wasn't the case this year because the Dolphins had to forfeit their first-round pick for violating the league's policies pertaining to the integrity of the game.

But then, with just one day until the team reported to training camp, Porter Jr. agreed to terms on a four-year, $9.618 million deal. Some were worried that the rookie may not report if no agreement was made, but now he can contribute immediately.

Stars are paid

The Steelers have dealt a couple of major extensions over the past couple offseasons, most notably to WR Diontae Johnson and LB T.J. Watt. Linebacker Alex Highsmith joined that list in late July when he signed a four-year, $68 million contract with the team.

Highsmith was entering the final year of his rookie contract, and although negotiations were ongoing, many were unsure if a deal would be reached. However, general manager Omar Khan stayed true to his ways and locked up Pittsburgh's budding star for the foreseeable future. With Highsmith's payday in the books, all the Steelers' stars should be happily paid.

No holdouts/hold ins

Pittsburgh has recently dealt with some training camp holdouts/hold ins as its players looking for new deals didn't practice. But it doesn't seem the Steelers will have any players sitting out this year following a very active offseason.

The team has a small list of 2024 free agents as all of them are either already playing on one-year deals or are in a prove-it type of year. Pittsburgh is certainly set up for success in 2023, with health remaining as the biggest obstacle the rest of the way.
