Coming into the 2022 season, there is no doubt the AFC West has become the most difficult division in the NFL. With Davante Adams and Russell Wilson joining the division, the Chargers knew they had to make some moves to compete. Therefore, the Chargers added strength to both sides of the ball with their draft picks and especially with the free agent market. With these new additions, the Chargers are going to be the team to beat in the AFC West.

How the Chargers Offense Will Dominate

After being in the NFL for only two seasons, Just Herbert has proven that he is an elite quarterback. After winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, Herbert went on to have an even better second season. Herbert holds the record for most passing yards and passing touchdowns in a players first two seasons in NFL history. Herbert should have an electric season after the Chargers added Zion Johnson to help protect him. Johnson will also help open up the run game, which the Chargers need to do.

The Chargers also drafted Texas A&M running back, Isaiah Spiller who will help back up starter Austin Ekeler. Spiller is a very strong, versatile running back that will get plenty of snaps to prove himself as being a regular down player. One big question going to the offseason is what Mike Williams will do. Williams has been a key player on this Chargers offense, especially last year. Williams had 1,146 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns this past season which showed the Chargers how badly they needed him. With that being said, Williams signed a three year $60 million extension. The Chargers offense ranked 4th overall last year and with these new deals, has the potential to be the best in the league.

Chargers Defense Adds Key Players

The one obstacle this team has been struggling with is their defense. The Chargers had the 20th ranked defense in the league last year and needed to make some changes. With that being said, they added Khalil Mack and J.C. Jackson to their defense. Having Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa on opposite ends of the line is a quarterbacks worst nightmare. Mack brings veteran experience and an explosive push that the Chargers desperately needed to stop the run game.

The Chargers secondary is loaded with weapons including Derwin James and Asante Samuel Jr. Adding J.C. Jackson solidified the Chargers as having one of the best secondary’s in football. Jackson signed a five year $82.5 million contract and will immediately be their go-to defender. J.C. Jackson will be marking teams WR1, while Asante Samuel Jr. will take their WR2 and give Derwin James the freedom to roam the secondary and help where needed. This defense is going to be a force to be reckoned with and will make a significant jump in ranks from last year.

How the Chargers Season Should Pan Out

The Chargers have one of the most talented rosters in the league without a doubt, but can they play together as a unit? The AFC West is going to be an exciting division to watch this season where any team has a chance to win. The Chargers have the upper-hand with some key additions and they should be able to come out victorious in what could be a tight race for the playoffs.  The Chargers open the season at home against the Raiders and away at the Chiefs. These two games will give a glimpse on how the season will turn out and if they will be able to take back this division which they haven’t won since 2009, where they won four consecutive titles.
