The days of Daniel Jones playing for the New York Giants are over. Moments ago, the franchise released him from the 53-man roster.
"Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him," Giants owner John Mara said. "We mutually agreed that would be best for him and the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future."
Once the Giants benched Jones for Tommy DeVito, fans assumed that he'd be put on ice for the rest of the season. After all, he has a $23 million injury guarantee in his contract. By placing him on waivers, the G-Men avoid that injury guarantee entirely.
Since Jones has two years remaining on his $160 million contract, he's expected to clear waivers. If that happens, he'll be eligible to sign with a new team on Monday after 4 p.m. ET.
Assuming Jones clears waivers, the Dallas Cowboys should pursue him.
Let's start off with the main issue for the Cowboys. They need help at quarterback now that Dak Prescott is out for the season. Jones wouldn't save them, but he'd at least present an upgrade over Cooper Rush, who has 566 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions this year.
And for those saying the Cowboys should just play Trey Lance at quarterback, just know Jerry Jones already shot down that idea.
“I don’t know about that,” Jones said when asked about Lance starting Week 12. “I want to give our team the very best chance it can — in all phases — to be successful. So, we’re going to go here with the quarterback that gives us the best chance to win the game.”
Even if we take out the football logic behind this move, there's entertainment value that Jerry Jones can't ignore.
The Cowboys face the Giants on Thanksgiving. Could you imagine Jones suiting up against his former team? Sure, it might not go well, but that would be great for ratings. And whether Jerry wants to admit it or not, he loves when his team is the center of attention.
So what do you say, Jerry? Give the people what they want this Thanksgiving: Tommy DeVito vs. Daniel Jones at AT&T Stadium. It can't be worse than the fight that stadium saw last Friday between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.
