The 2024 season was supposed to be a reclamation for New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. After coming off a 2023 season in which he played poorly and had multiple injuries, this was the year that the real Danny Dimes was going to show up. Well, it appears as though he has.
While judging a player after one game is usually silly, it may not be with Jones, especially if we look at the last two opening games. In 2023, the Giants got smoked by the Dallas Cowboys 40-0 in Week 1, and Jones threw for a paltry 104 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Fast-forward a year later, and the Giants got crushed by the Minnesota Vikings. Jones’ line: 186 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions.
In 2023, the Giants proceeded to lose four out of their next five games, and the season was essentially over. If the team wants to avoid a similar fate this year, sticking with Jones may not be the answer. And going with either Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito could inject a little life into the offense, but it might just be temporary. Instead, New York should consider going out and getting a QB.
With the season underway, the pool of still-available free-agent QBs is not terribly deep, but it does include an enticing name: Ryan Tannehill. While he didn’t have a great 2023 season and 2022 was just so-so, it was only three years ago that Tannehill threw for 21 touchdowns and led the Titans to a 12-5 record. These are numbers that Giants fans would kill for right now.
It could make more sense, however, for the Giants to trade for a player to fill in right now and be a bridge QB for the future. One intriguing name is someone they talked to in the offseason about potentially joining Big Blue: Russell Wilson. While he’s still expected to regain the starting spot for Pittsburgh when healthy, if backup Justin Fields continues to play well — and the Steelers continue to win — Wilson could end up being dispensable.
Jameis Winston is another QB that perhaps could be obtained for the right price. The current backup in Cleveland hasn’t started a game in a couple of years, but he’s only 30 years old and has proven to be a dynamic (albeit erratic) QB.
It has become pretty clear that the Giants need to make a move, and that they need to make it soon.
