Zach Wilson was far from the sole reason the Jets lost Sunday to the Lions, 20-17, but his performance made clear that the Jets will be going nowhere this season with him at QB.
This was far from Wilson's worst game. His stats -- 18-for-35 for 317 yards with two touchdowns and one interception --- weren't terrible.
The 2021 second overall pick made eye-popping plays that only a handful of NFL quarterbacks can make. According to Pro Football Focus, he made five "big time throws," tying Josh Allen for the most this week.

But the Jets (7-7) -- who must win their last three games to make the postseason for the first time in more than a decade -- will not make the playoffs with Wilson at QB.
The biggest issue is Wilson still does not make the easier throws that keep the offense in rhythm. This makes it hard to sustain drives and operate efficiently.
Zach Wilson's off-target pct was 35.3%, actually worse than his infamous game at NE (35.0%), per @ESPNStatsInfo.

The 35.3% mark ranks 434th out of 442 individual passing performances this season. #Jets
Wilson's "big time throws" can get the Jets out of a pinch, but far too often these splash plays are required because of the quarterback's mistakes on previous plays. If Wilson doesn't overshoot a wide-open receiver on first down and take an avoidable sack on second down, he doesn't need to make an unbelievable play to keep the drive alive on third and 20.
Wilson only threw one interception against Detroit's third-worst passing defense. At least two other throws, however, could have been interceptions against a better secondary.
I sincerely have no idea what Zach was trying to do here, what an amazing job by Carter to rob what should've been INT #2 pic.twitter.com/t7B4VoOb9g

The "big time throws" show there's still hope for Wilson in the NFL, but he needs an entire offseason to work on making the easy ones. As it stands, he can't play well enough to win against the final three opponents (Jaguars, Seahawks, Dolphins). Each has a better passing defense than Detroit. All three are also fighting for a playoff spot.
In his time as starter, Mike White proved he can make the easy throws and keep the offense in rhythm. If he is sidelined for much longer with his rib injury, the Jets fading playoff hopes may slip away for good.
