Will Cowboys Nostalgia Bring Shedeur Sanders to Dallas?

I knew Dallas would end up in the Shedeur Sanders rumor that is circulating.

Jerry Jones loves publicity about as much as he loves Deion Sanders. Add in a young player with that famous father, and you may have a match made in Jerry Jones heaven.

Somebody had to connect the dots.

Pro Football & Sports Network listed the Cowboys as one of three possible landing spots if the Cleveland Browns decide to move on. Along with the Cowboys, the 49ers and Buccaneers were mentioned too, but Dallas is the team that makes people stop scrolling.

And why wouldn’t they?

I just don’t want to see the Cowboys turning another backup quarterback idea into a full-blown mess.

Dallas Should Check In, But Be Cautious

A lot of us know the Browns have a crowded quarterback room, so I think this rumor has a little smoke behind it.

ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Rizzo said,

“There are talks (and) ongoing calls about the availability of Shedeur Sanders. The Browns, for whatever reason, don’t think he’s the guy. That’s my opinion, and I’m sure they’ll say, ‘What are you talking about? He’s in a quarterback battle.’”

Then he said something that stuck with me,

“But I’m gonna say, right now for the record, I don’t think the four quarterbacks are going to camp on July 28,” He added. “I don’t. Nothing is imminent, but the calls are being made. And I think it’s probably in the best interest of both parties here.”

This is not a trade report, but strictly speculation at this point. However, teams are checking the temperature on this guy.

I think Dallas should be in that group. At least, I think they should make the call and see what the price is, and see if Cleveland is about to do something dumb.

The Cowboys just can’t do anything desperate for a quarterback who would sit on the sideline, especially when they just traded for a developmental project last season.

Shedeur Sanders Over Joe Milton III

From strictly a football standpoint. Is Shedeur Sanders better than Joe Milton?

Right now, I believe the answer is yes.

Joe Milton undeniably has the bigger arm. This young man can throw a football through a brick wall, but I don’t trust the rest of his game.

He doesn’t have touch, timing, or the processing to get significant minutes.

I don’t want you to misunderstand. I do not think Sanders is a finished product after seeing his numbers last season; 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in eight games is not pretty.

Still, I think Sanders is a more natural quarterback. From the few games I watched him play last season, he looked more under control, and doesn’t look as raw when the first read isn’t there.

So, if I had to choose between Shedeur Sanders and Joe Milton as a developmental quarterback behind Dak Prescott, give me Shedeur.

Just don’t give up a good pick for him.

Dak Prescott Could Help Shedeur Grow

This is where I think the fit could help Shedeur grow.

Shedeur Sanders doesn’t need another messy quarterback room. He’s had plenty of that in Cleveland, and if the Cowboys could add him, I would want to keep it simple. Sit behind Dak Prescott and learn.

Dak knows the job, even though many of you think otherwise. He has dealt with injury comebacks, playoff letdowns, but he is a good quarterback and could be Shedeur’s Tony Romo type of mentor.

Having a veteran quarterback who has been in the NFL and knows how to prepare could be the catalyst Shedeur Sanders needs to become a good NFL quarterback, not just someone living off of daddy’s name.

I wouldn’t want this to be Shedeur walking into some fabricated controversy or Dallas just trying to get headlines, which it will. I just want a young quarterback with talent sitting behind a proven NFL quarterback.

I Like the Call, Not the Possible Cost

Bleacher Report argued that trading Sanders right now would be foolish for Cleveland, and I agree.

Why move him before camp sorts out their problem?

We all know Deshaun Watson is not a safe bet and Todd Monken is trying to turn the Browns around with a new offense. Shedeur Sanders has talked about Monken bringing “new energy” and a fresh culture.

That doesn’t sound like a player being shopped to me.

I only want the Cowboys to be interested if the Browns get antsy.

If Shedeur Sanders costs almost nothing, then take a swing and stop pretending Joe Milton is the long-term answer behind Dak. Sanders is the better prospect with more usable traits and gives Dallas a more interesting project.

That’s where I’m at on this subject.

I wouldn’t give up a valuable pick for a quarterback with a famous name. Dallas has done enough cutesy stuff at the position over the last several years.

But if Cleveland is going to do Cleveland things and just give him away for pennies on the dollar, I’d answer the phone.
