Will Harris injury sends Commanders into full-blown crisis mode

The Washington Commanders were dealing with some severe injury issues heading into their Week 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. However, this didn't stop Dan Quinn's squad from putting together another emphatic display to secure a comprehensive victory on home soil.

It was another fine showcase of the team's resolve. Unfortunately, it came with yet more frustrating collateral damage.

Several influential players left the game. Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore was evaluated for a concussion. Second-round rookie Trey Amos is dealing with a calf problem. Special-teams ace Percy Butler sustained a blow to the hip. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin brought more concern with a quad issue.

Commanders safety Will Harris sustained a fractured fibula against the Raiders

Things look far more worrisome around veteran safety Will Harris. The free-agent signing was in the midst of his best performance since joining the Commanders, with his pass breakup on All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers among his notable highlights. This momentum now seems to have come screeching to an abrupt halt.

Concerns were immediate when Harris went out of the game. He was ruled out soon after, and an update from Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network revealed that the defensive back sustained a fractured fibula at Northwest Stadium.

Harris now faces a prolonged spell on the sidelines. If it's a severe fracture, he's done for the season.

This injury crisis shows no signs of slowing down. The Commanders slotted Jeremy Reaves into Harris' spot, and he performed well. Washington also has Tyler Owens and Butler to pick up rotational reps if needed, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Adam Peters bring another experienced figure into the fold.

It's another starting-caliber performer on the shelf. Harris joins Austin Ekeler, Deatrich Wise Jr., and Jonathan Jones as long-term absences. The Commanders also had quarterback Jayden Daniels unavailable in Week 3, but Marcus Mariota managed to fill that void effectively enough.

Although it's far from ideal, the Commanders' roster has some decent depth. Losing Harris represents a blow, especially considering he was expected to replace Jeremy Chinn. Washington must roll with the punches, put the team's contingency plans in place, and keep the momentum going in the face of adversity.

That's the only way Quinn and his players are going to meet bigger expectations this season. This early injury crisis is just a small bump in the road for now. But if others don't step up, it becomes a much more concerning issue.

Harris will be missed. But others within the safety room could thrive in his absence.
